Huh?
No... that's just a "CAMARO".

By the numbers:

1st gen Camaro Length 184.7 in
2nd gen Camaro Length 195.4 - 197.6 in
3rd gen Camaro Length 192.6 in
4th gen Camaro Length 193.5 in

The Camaro hasn't been less than 192.5 inches since 1969!

Considering the 2005 Mustang is ~188 inches, and the 2005 GTO is ~190 inches, a 190-195 inch Camaro would be appropriate.

What you guys want is simply not a Camaro by definition and by the historical significance of the marque.

Just take a deep breath and let it go.

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

I know what you're saying jg, but Camaro has been a needlessly large car (exterior-wise) for most of that time. A "sporty coupe" that is over 16 feet long is out of place in today's market. 185-188" is the sweet spot for tomorrow's Camaro....and that's even "large" compared to most other products in its class......

That may or may not be correct, that I will not argue. However what you and others have been describing is quite simply not a Camaro.

Go ahead and resdeign a new 21st century short wheelbase RWD peformance coupe... just don't call it CAMARO.

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

Im not sure if a short wheelbase is what is being argued for. The length is what is the big sticking point. Cant speak for anyone but myself, however I feel that a long wheelbase with a shorter overall length would be ideal. That gives you a slighty tidier car with a longer wheelbase for better handling and ride. That would EASILY be an awesome CAMARO! Lots of power, good ride, awesome handling, good use of interior space, what more could someone want?

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

Squeeze the longest possible wheelbase onto the shortest possible overall length.

What you'll get is a car with sporty exterior dimensions, more than adequate interior space and great proportions.

Nobody said anything about a short wheelbase Camaro. In fact, even if Camaro's new length shrinks the wheelbase will more than likely get longer. Besides, at just 101" the 3rd and 4th Gen F-bodies had a very short wheelbase not just compared to coupes but to most any vehicle on the road!

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

Looks like another 10 votes and nearly 3/4 still want it smaller than '05 Mustang.

EDIT:even with a couple of double votes for the big car

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

OK, no Camaro should be 195.5" long today. That would be 2 1/2" bigger than 4th Gens. I say 187"-190" is the bracket it should be in with a 108" or so wheelbase, but closer to 190" since even the usually little M*stang is 188", the GTO is 189", and cars have been getting a little bigger lately. I like 187"-190" the best for the 5th Gen basically but going bigger than 190" or smaller than 185" for this car today is being a little crazy. It depends though, alot of times cars don't appear to be what their specs say.

BTW, the bigger sizes have lead the poll since the start, which would be 185.5"-190". I'd bet most of them are looking for the 187"/188" area. It really shouldn't be made into this many or that many quarters of voters want this or that but what the poll actually says, and its says most have voted that they want the bigger choices.

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

I think we need to look at the coupe market today to determine how large or small the Camaro should be. Looking into the past about the size of the Camaro is simply a reflection of the era. The 2nd Gen Camaro was small considering that we had massive Coupe Devilles and other land barges everywhere. 3rd Gen cars shrunk because cars were getting smaller in the 1980's. The 4th Gen cars never really reflected the buyers wish for a small and compact coupe. The excessive size of the 4th Gen might have been one of the reasons it didn't sell as well.

What a fantastic point Aron! One that I've brought up many times.

It's all relative. And except for the 4th gen, Camaro has generally been a small car - compared to the cars that it shared the road with.

As some post dimensions of all the previous Camaros....remember one thing....what is this in relation to? You cannot compare them in a vacuum.

I can remember when I was six, staring out the window of my dad's car. When I'd see a then new '67 Camaro....compared to the land yahts it maneuvered around...Camaro seemed like such a rakish, sporty little car.

I'd like to see the 5th gen give me the same feeling.

Re: Choose your ideal new Camaro

You must have a different memory than I. Aside from the 1st gens, the Camaro has never been a "small" car. In each and every generation, there were smaller cars on the road, and in fact Chevrolet also had smaller, more compact models to sell to those that wanted a small car. (FWIW They also had the smaller Corvair and ChevyII/Nova in 67-69, as well.)

Fast forward to the present. You want a smaller performace coupe? Chevrolet already makes the Cobalt at 180.5-inches. If it wasn't for FWD, the Cobalt would pretty much satisfy the needs of everyone who voted for 180-184.5 inches in length. And with a 103.5 inch wheelbase that is longer than the 3rd and 4th gen Camaros, most of you would be happy if it were RWD and came with an optional V8. That is if you actually believe what you've all been saying up to this point.

And I won't knock the Cobalt. It is a great car in its own right, and I honestly believe GM has hit a home run that the tuner crowd will eventually warm up to. (Which I imagine is exactly what GM intended.) However, it is not a Camaro replacement, nor should a Cobalt proportioned car ever be considered for a Camaro. Heck, based on what several of you have said about the GTO being too big to be a Camaro, the Cobalt fits exactly what you have all be describing... except its FWD and comes with a 4 cylinder. And I'll bet had GM decided to go RWD with the Cobalt, several of you would be saying "they should've shoehorned a V8 in there and called it Camaro."

Nope. All you people looking for that smaller GM sports coupe already got what you asked for. You just haven't realised it yet, or haven't taken the time to actually listen to yourselves.

As for the rest of us? We want a new Camaro. So shut the heck up, go buy a Cobalt, and leave the real Camaros to the big boys.
