Not to why they didn't use the newer versions of Mercedes own 6 (which I still cannot believe is a 90 degree design, while the 3800 is ripped for being a 90 degree "sawed off V8"...).
1. The original Crossfire concept used a supercharged 2.7 liter, an engine that was considered for production.

2. The OHV drivetrain is the reason why the 3800 V6 has nasty sound effects at high rpms. The balance shafted 90 degree V6 format can support high rpms (the balance shaft only turns at 1xtimes engine speed) and can even be used for diesel applications. Audi's new V6, V8 and V10 diesels are all in the same 90 degree family and Mercedes will finally produce a 90 degree 3.0 liter V6 diesel that's basically "sawed off" from the 4.0 liter V8.

Probably true. Still, the Mercedes designed transmission is a great selling point in the 300C and Magnum RT. A "borrowed" Mecedes motor, such as the soon-to-be-superceded 3.7 liter would be a real image booster for cars like 300 Touring and Magnum SXT.

I know Chrysler's computers tend not to be charitable to high performance as far as automatic transmission shifts & engine management (R/T Dakotas were nortorious for this). Think this has anything to do with the LX V6's less than stellar acceleration?
