the chevy cobalt
Re: the chevy cobalt
I think its a bad idea to only give it 205 hp and market it to the SRT-4 crowd. You can get the SRT for a little over $20K making it cheaper than the Cobalt and I think it wil have no problem out-performing it stock vs stock. The SRT will do the quarter in the high 13s and with a few hundred bucks worth of mods, you can get it into low to mid 13s. If they could have put the Cobalt out for about $17-$18K I think it may do better.
Re: the chevy cobalt
You cant always base everything on 1/4 performance. Most compact car buyers want a car that handles as well, and if the Ion RL is any indication, the Cobalt SS should be quite the little pocket rocket.
Its little SC 2.0 motor will deffinatly have plenty of room to grow. I say the Cobalt SS will offer more for the money then just 1/4 performance. Interior is WORLDS better as well. I hope GM keeps up with this little car, especialy with the new Golf coming out, and much hyped Civic Si.

Once again , the 205 hp is underrated . Ions are putting close to that out at the wheels and the low rev limiter issue in the Ion's will be tuned out of the cobalt . The Cobalt is a light years better car than the $22K SRT-4 in all aspects and the forged ecotec in the cobalt will take alot more boost than its 12.5 psi stock . The SRT-4 may be a smidge faster stock , but sorry ....its a great motor in a absolute turd of a car . I mean it doesnt even look cool . My $22K is on the Cobalt , an attractive car , that handles and has near luxury levels of refinement . Thats the kinda bang for buck Im talkin bout . My opinions are based on the fact that I would never buy a car like this purely for straightline acceleration , that crosses the ugly inside and out neon completely off the list .

The SRT-4 is no doubt the watermark as far as FWD performance, but until we get the SS, we'll have no real knowledge as to how it'll stack up. The SRT-4 is under rated....alot. Early word is the Cobalt SS will be underrated alot as well (25 horses is the rumor at the moment).
There's also gearing and torque curve to consider (superchargers have max low end torque far lower in the RPM range than turbos), so it's likely the SS will be quicker off the line.
There's also the feel of quality. Cobalt's interior is in a different league than Neon.
Finally, Neon is toast after this coming year. The replacement will be a Mitsu Mirage underneath & I believe there will be a different family of engines, and possibly a gap in SRT-4s replacement.
Unless Ford has something up their sleeve for Focus, Cobalt SS is likely to be the quickest domestic 4 banger till the Kappa turbos are out.

You said Kappa turbo like it was a done thing. The Kappa cars really need a turbo power plant. I have had an itch to build a 4 banger but no 4 cyl cars meet my personal rules.
1. It must be domestic
2. It has to be RWD
I would also like A factory FI motor and dont like a transverse mouted mid engine rwd layout.

For the longest time you couldnt open a magazine without seeing a Mustang add..You got some smark cookies working in the ford Marketing Division . Chevy's boys where alseep .
Ever see a comercial expressing the power of the LS1 Camaro? Nope..How bout a SS commercial that got you thinkg...hmm..thats one bad *** ride! Chevy never bothered to attempt this . Advertising is expensive but in tight knit markets , its the only way to spread the word . Most of the people I know that didnt like Camaro's " Until they met me " knew absolutely nothing about them . They had no clue of the enormous amount of power a stock Camaro had and many where under the illusion that a GT or mainly anythuing else on the road considered to eb a sports car could take them.

Do some research before you tell people they're wrong. In this instance, it will surprise you WHY the car is dead.

The '05 commercials are coming out now, but it had been at least 3 years since I saw a Mustang ad, aside from Bill Ford talking about one in a FORD ad...not necessarily a MUSTANG ad.

What kind of sense does it make fr gm to say " Oh , gee , this car needs to go away , lets not advertise "
I have read it plenty of places that bad marketing killed the F-bod . Its not an opinion of mine , its something I have read numerous times over the years .
If I wasnt sure of it or hadnt read it from someone who edited a an article on it , I would not have said it .
Re: the chevy cobalt
GM had firm plans in the mid 90's to axe the f-cars. If I am not mistaken, it was originally scheduled to end in 1998. Obviously, it got extended four years beyond that.
There was no need to spend millions of dollars to advertise a vehicle that was doomed.
BTW, stop pissing at each other about it.
