the chevy cobalt

Anyone see or drive one yet?I was intrigued after seeing the commercial with the vett,figuring GM was positioning the Cobalt as its #2 car since the Camaro is on hiatus.

But look at the numbers :
Coupe

Starting at $14,190*

* 145-hp 2.2L ECOTEC DOHC engine
* Five-speed manual transmission
* Front cloth bucket seats and 60/40 split-bench rear seat
* AM/FM stereo with CD player
* Air conditioning
* 15-inch wheels and tires
* Premium Ride suspension
* Electric power steering

LS Coupe
(in addition to, or in place of, Cobalt Coupe features)

Starting at $16,485*

* Sport Cloth front bucket seats and 60/40 split-bench rear seat
* Uplevel AM/FM stereo with CD player
* Four-wheel antilock brakes
* Cargo convenience net in trunk
* Cruise control
* Power windows and door locks with Remote Keyless Entry
* Body-color power outside rearview mirrors
* 15-inch aluminum wheels
* Available Sport Package with rear spoiler, 16-inch wheels with Pirelli tires and more

SS Supercharged Coupe (available early 2005)

Starting at $21,995*

* 205-hp 2.0L ECOTEC Supercharged DOHC engine
* 18-inch wheels and tires, high-mounted rear spoiler, foglamps, and unique front and rear fascias
* SS Supercharged specific five-speed manual transmission
* Leather-appointed front bucket seats with color-keyed perforated inserts
* AM/FM stereo with CD/MP3 player
* Seven-speaker Pioneer premium sound system
* Titanium-faced instrumentation, including a boost gauge
* Leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio and cruise controls
* Body-color power outside rearview mirrors
* Four-wheel antilock disc brakes

The supercharged model is only 205 hp. My friggin 89 RS is faster!!!!

And check this out:

Gary Cowger, president of GM, said the new Cobalt is certain to become a feared competitor in the small or compact car segment, which has long been ruled by Japan's Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic models."We think it will be better than anything in this class from power to the ride and handling, to fit and finish," Cowger said. "We are really, really pleased with this car and we think it's going to make a big statement and it will come out in four different levels, including the highest level, which is to be a tuner."

Cowger predicted the tuner version of the Cobalt will help attract a whole new generation of automotive enthusiasts to GM and the Chevy brand.

And I predict if this is the future Im gonna be sick

Anyone with first hand experience?

Do a search in the 5th Gen And Future Vehicle forum. Somebody drove it a while ago and gave quite a positive review.

You sure about that? The power and torque curve might be different, not to mention the power to weight ratio might be a bit different as well. Screw a little bit of boost into it, and that thing will leave you in the dust, if not already.

Boosting and modding it will be no problem, the aftermarket is going to be all over this car. I predict that this will be a pretty decent success.

Moving to the right forum...

Re: the chevy cobalt

If your 89 RS is stock , you will DEFINATLY get smoked pretty badly by a Cobalt SS As proved by ION dyno figures at the front wheels , the 205 is underrated . Also , the fuel cutoff rev limiter will be raised in the cobalt so the motor can actually be where its making the most power ......unlike the current ION redline . It will be a qwik car stock , with a already strong forged bottom end . Pully , some fuel upgrades and a good intercooler and the thing will be flyin

Hate to be the one to break it to ya, but that Cobalt SS WILL eat your 89 RS alive, without any mercy whatsoever!

You are making a huge mistake of looking only at the horsepower numbers and ignoring torque and vehicle weight. The SRT-4 has just 25 ponys more & it's LT1 F-body quick. Add Mopar's stage one kit which I think is less than $300, and the Neon SRT-4 is well in LS1 territory.

BTW, that 205 rating for the Cobalt is low. It's probally putting that down at the wheels!

Do a search here and at other sites. The Cobalt SS is going to ROCK!!!

The tuner market is where it's at right now, and as the sucess of the SRT-4 has shown, if you do a FWD high performance pocket missle and price it around $20K, it's gonna sell. GM has sat on the sideline in this market long enough. Ford made a good attempt with the SVT Focus, but while they got handling down perfect, they forgot a blower and it didn't sell.

I was at press introduction last year and I've gotten to spend some time checking out the sedan. GM got this one right. Cobalt (the supercharged SS in particular) is the one car at GM that I feel is a winner in it's segment.

Gary Cowger is 110% right in everything he said!

Re: the chevy cobalt

Cobalt SS is a pretty cool car, The only complaint I have is that the power isn't going to the rear wheels

With the exception of the SRT-4 the Cobalt SS will be faster than the other 84319048710 econoboxes on the market including everything from Japan and Europe under $25K

Cobalt SS is a low 14's car, a 205HP Camaro is a mid 15's car

Re: the chevy cobalt

Cobalt SS could be like DSMs if they were AWD. Nice HP to start out with modding if you've got a great awd launch. I'd never buy them as they are now though.

Heck there's a lot of things that can be faster than the Cobalt SS when they're modified. I still don't see your point. I think the Cobalt looks like a great daily driver and the SS could gain quite a following...if they ever switch from supercharging to turbocharging look out.

Re: the chevy cobalt

I just dont see how the commercial people can market them as a "econo-vett" and not feel guilty.

A good car on its own?Sure,why not. GMs #2 performance car?No,I hope not.

seems like a good marketing strategy to me
a "smaller vette-in-a-package" car for 20 g's
and maybe not necessarily gm's #2 car, but chevy's #2, sure
nothing else in chevy's stable can compete with it (that is a car,and i don't count the ssr as a car)
