Is that pronounced "Crap-pile", or "Cray-Peel"?

Edit: I don't think Sonic is a bad name. Much better than Aveo.

Add me to the list of those that don't like Sonic. I'm not sure what it is, maybe just the way the word sounds, kind of a wimpy pronunciation without much music to it or hard-edged vowels to make it sound more aggressive. In that respect, I like Aveo much better.

It also seems like an 'old' name, kinda like it was from back in the 1950s when automakers were trying to relate their cars to jets or space exploration. It seems out of sync with today.

 

As if anyone here was looking to get into an Aveo based on it's name...

I think Sonic could be a real good name if they make a sporty version. Something with say 200HP. What is the biggest engine that will fit in this car?

Cruze is bad enough. For the replacing of Cobalt.

Might as well call it the Chevy Widgit.

 

If it's a good car it's going to sell regardless of what it's called. Period, end-o-story.

I think we get too hung up on nameplates. Besides the very brand-essential names like Corvette, Camaro, Impala and Malibu who really gives a schnikey what Chevy's small car is named so long as it isn't named something like "Crappile" as suggested earlier.....and provided it's a good car. Sonic sounds a little limp-wristed maybe, but it's not horrible and I don't think it's going to play into the car's ultimate success or failure at all.

This just isn't something to get your knickers in a twist over.

Its not about getting undies all ties up its really got people going WTF is wrong with GM naming the car like that. It looks like I am not alone in this either. Like I said go do some searching about this on other forums and you will see there is out and out lambasting GM for this.

And your right its not the name its the car. Well this is supposed to be a better car. Why not call it the Aveo. They gave a better car t othe Malibu. They are giving a better car to Impala and the sure as hell gave a better car to Camaro. The car does make the same. There have been good cars and bad cars. This one is not just causing me to go WTF..many others are also saying why?

 

That brings me to the other point the name should be as important as the car.
Look at GTO how much people pissed and moaned about the last one?
A car is as only as good as its components and the name of that car should be part of what makes it special to have.


I think names just have gone to wayside to really making a car stand out..in a good lasting way.

 

See my comment about internet people lambasting GM. It isn't surprising, and these people wouldn't own a "Sonic" if you gave them one for free and named it the Chevy BadAss instead. The target market for the car is just going to want a good, fuel efficient runabout.

 

Well the Aveo forum is not to please..from what I see..sure every car out there has a forum. But the idea that changing the name to basically the same entry level offering in a new car will do something.

Well all I can say is this cars going to fail because of the name.
Good car bad name..bad car good name..thats the problem.

 

I actually have no problem with Sonic. I'd imagine it was selected in attempt to go after the youth market. (No not because of the hedgehog or fast food chain... because it sounds hip and catchy... certainly more so than Aveo.)

 

Name another car that was a really good car, well received by critics, but failed simply because of its name (and that being the widely accepted reason). I can't think of one.

 

wtf is wrong with "Sonic"? Sounds like a good name to me. Most of the other suggestions mentioned in this thread are rehashed names from the 60's-70's. yeah...that'll resonate with the 20 something year olds that would buy the car... As mentioned, Sonic sure beats out names like Fiesta, Yaris, Versa, etc.

I'm convinced that there is not a single non-recycled name that you guys wouldn't bitch and moan about. How many people bitched about "Cobalt" back in 2004, and now are all for calling the next car a "Cobalt". I bet there were several.

 

Worst offender for a car name that I can think of is the Probe. They made it for 8 years (89-97), and it still managed to average over 100,000 units per year (837,273 Probes sold according to Wikipedia).

Goes to show you, a good car can sell fine with a bad name. And on that note, Sonic is not a bad name. I like it. It's new and exciting. Not stale, old, and tired.
