I agree that the Malibu making the list is the biggest accomplishment. Especially since the way the list works is once you are on it you stay unless a significantly revised or new model can knock you off.
I don't know about this new GTI, but the Mazda 3 is probably the best all around car in its segment.

I like it. Im surprised G8 isnt on there. Ive always been confused about one thing though. The Mag COTY like motortrend usually has a criteria of new or different. G8 is all new this year, so if it doesnt make it this year, does that mean it doesnt have a chance next year when its no longer all new? Vette and 3 series are awesome car but is it their coolness factors that override the newness rule? dont get me wrong, I still love reading and checking them out, but I take them with a grain of salt.
The G8 will be eligible for the 2009 MT Car of the Year.
