Re: Camaro Z/28 vs Challenger SRT-8 vs Mustang GT500

I'm all for z28 going head to head with SRT/SVT's best, but i don't see that happening price nor performance wise. I think GM will pick up where it left off with the 4th gen and position the z28 to be an under 30k performance coupe to compete with the likes of the Mustang GT/Mach1, 5.7L hemi challenger, etc....

One thing is near certain, the rumored Challenger SRT-8 and the Shelby GT500 will have price tags in the 36k-40k range. I can't picture GM pricing a z28 into that territory. Perhaps this is a task better suited for some like an SS where higher costs isn't as big a concern?

GM will pretty much have to dump/reverse their 4th gen strategy if they are to make this happen with the z28 imo....and who knows....they just might.

GM never made a 4th gen SS, SLP did.
Z28 has always been Camaro's top model. Just because some guy who makes oil pans decideds to put a catback and a hood on a car doesnt make it an "SS" any different then a Z28.

I still like to go with the twins approach. Have both the SS and Z28 share the 6.0 engine, but the Z28 gets more race ready stuff, and SS gets more luxury stuff.
Just my input.

I think that's splitting hairs..GM may not have made the 'SS' but they sure marketed it as the top Camaro.

With the Corvette rule in place, when the new Z comes out, we will end up with the least amount of horsepower. The Mustang and Charger will have a lot more room to work with because they dont have siblings anywhere near there price range. If the Shelby ends up being the car people say it will, I dont think any of us are going to have anything for it. Looks like it will still give a C6 all it wants with easier modability due to the blower and cost less (well, MSRP less anyway, not including market adjustments). The vette is a blessing and a curse at the same time. Am I wrong? This is all speculation at best anyway.

I undertand that rule, but it hasn't always been strickly adhered to, the '96 SS cars had 5 more rate hp than the C4 Vette'

Plus, add the fact that the next gen Camaro might not have quite as nice interior as the Vette, some of it's options, and certainately not it's exclusivity, and there's still an agruement for a Vette' over a slightly more powerful Camaro.

Even if the Camaro has more power then the Vette it really doesn't matter. The Vette is a light 2 seater roadster that will walk all over any Camaro, and doesn't have the "redneck" stigma attached.

This is true. However, for Chevy to make an SS competitve with the Shelby its gonna have to be supercharged. Ford has simply raised the bar with these supercharged engines. Me myself, I'm more of an N/A guy but superchargers do make a convincing argument. That said, we are a addressing a limited production car here. There is no doubt in my mind that a Z28 vs GT horsepower/torque battle will be won by the Z. But to get to the level the Shelby will demand just seems like it will be out of reach for the SS. No?
