I'm up to date on all the issues around the car's demise and hiatus and who can say what and can't say what, but still...

..I can't help but shiver a little bit that that time frame could be potentially detrimental to the car, not only because it looks like it'll be unfashionably late to the party, but also the automotive scene may be changing agaian by that time.

2008, even if it's released very early say spring/winter or '07, is a very long way off.

Yeah, I know, but I'm starting to feel like the poor kid living in the rich neighborhood. Everyone around me has great new toys to play with or be excited about

Three industry sources said the auto maker is considering Oshawa for a rear-wheel-drive platform called Zeta that will provide the base for the next generation of the Pontiac GTO sedan, and a return of the Chevrolet Camaro sports car in 2008.

That paragraph is powerful to me and says just about everything that we need to know.

1) 2008 year
2) The article mentions two cars. Perhaps significant is the car not mentioned: Firebird. The article says the platform in question will serve as the basis for the next Gen Pontiac GTO and for the return of the Camaro. Unless GTO fails big time, Firebird will not be back.
3) Zeta platform? Has that been mentioned here before? Can someone explain to me the highlights of the platform. For example, will it be solid rear axel based or IRS?
4) A plant is being specifically mentioned.

This is the best concrete evidence I've seen of a Camaro's return and it's says a lot.

Zeta has IRS and is a morphed Sigma(CTS, SRX, STS) chassis. It will be used in the US, in Oz and in Europe. The Zeta chassis is made to use both HV and HF V6 engines, OHC and OHV V8's, and made for the new 6spd auto.
Take a look at the Buick Velite for an idea on Zeta. The Velite has a twin turbo, 400hp 3.6 DOHC VVT V6. And its RWD with a 6spd Auto.

and I personaly think that Chevy should bring it out in 07 on its 40th anni. Then they can sell sticker and stripped models out the ying yang.

Well at least it will be out in 07 (40th Anniversary) but if it's an 08 I don't think it will count for that. 06 for 07 would have been so much better.

There's a thread on this going on a C&G. Some people are thinking "Chi" is actually "G"-body. That the interviewer heard someone "G" platform and thought they said "Chi".

In other words...it may be a mistake.

Will a Zeta IRS rear even handle 400 ft-lbs of torque??? Probably so, but for how long? I wonder how well it would hold up at the track? Just curious.

i think 08 is a PERFECT time for a new fbody. most people today dont keep cars longer than 5 years. some do but most dont. that will give them time to buy whatever car they want now and still be able to trade it in for a new camaro in 08. brand loyalty isnt a huge thing anymore either. if a company doesnt make exactly what the customer wants and for the exact price the customer wants then they go someplace else. i think that can play in huge favor for gm now. especially in this market with a rwd performance car that will be affordable.

I'd say, some versions will be designed from the beginning to handle substantially more.

If a Turbocharged AWD G35 comes out before the next Camaro...I'm buying the G35.

But what are the chances of that

Since the 'tacked on" Cobra IRS can do it, I'd think that a "designed-from-the-beginning" Zeta IRS would have no problem.
