"Camaro" in the News

Globe and Mail Story

Three industry sources said the auto maker is considering Oshawa for a rear-wheel-drive platform called Zeta that will provide the base for the next generation of the Pontiac GTO sedan, and a return of the Chevrolet Camaro sports car in 2008.

Some of their info from"industry sources" could have been from sites like ours. At any rate it's good to see "Camaro" in print again.

But here is something new to me:

"Another option is a new front-wheel-drive platform code-named Chi in the series of new GM platforms named after the letters in the Greek alphabet."

I'm really up on this stuff....and that's the first I've heard of Chi. I wonder if that's what they'll rename the revamped W-car platform?

Anyone heard of Chi?

Wow! A news release that actually said Camaro and 'future rear drive car'. I don't know what to think about this but,

1.), 2008, that is a damn long hiatus. Glad I bought my '98 Z last year
2.) that article said it's too early to be sure of anything.
3.) I'm just gonna be giddy the rest of the afternoon that another source of info outside this forum mentioned anything about a future Camaro.

Very possible.

But if I can find this stuff out, I'm sure anyone staying on top of plant planning in the media with better connections than I have can do even better.

But also note, the Ste. Therese plant is G-O-N-E!!! Saying "Camaro" now isn't going to create any demands on GM keeping a relatively expensive plant that is far larger than they need forcing them to build a relatively low production car far away from the rest of their operations in Oshawa.

Though "it's not GM's policy to talk about future cars", I think you'll hear the word Camaro alot more now.

BTW: Get used to that phrase or words to that effect. You may start hearing it often when Camaro questions come up.

Do you realize if it is MY2008, it'd be a SIX YEAR gap in production for the nameplate?

That's like skipping a whole platform lifecycle from some manufacturers.

In the Camaro's case...it would have barely missed a mild, mid-life freshening.

Good news, but the news of Osh going to Zeta is kinda old now isnt it? But I thought that Osh was going to be the 2nd plant to come on line with Zeta. What of this Chi platform? Sounds like a replacement for W.

Ya very true... and an issue that Red has said is acklowledged by GM as a problem with Camaro over the years (importance of frequent freshenings in this segment)... hopefully this will be addressed in the future.

that is a long time, but that is about what we all figured, should be just in time for the mustang to have stolen all the rwd sales away from gm so when the camaro debut's it will fall flat on its face. Way to go GM who,hoo Now with the charger more fact then rumor, and the 05 stang will own, and there wont be much of a market left for the camaro. Plus thats almost 10 years since the ls1 came out. Should be alot better powertrain i would hope.

This does seem like a long time however when you think about it GM is increasing it's speed to roll out vehicles on a consistant basis. The rumor of 2008 may just be a front to hold people off for a while so that they won't be expecting it when it comes out late in 06 as an 07 model JMHO

It is very encouraging tho to see the name in the news again...

My biggest concern is that when it comes back the Mustang will either be getting a new facelift or a new re-design... I just hope the designers are up for the challenge! I'd like to see the Camaro being sold like it was back in the glory days of 150K+ units/year
