Re: C6 Corvette, not in enough colors?

I loved the green Corvettes, they were so rare and so classy looking. When I lived in Midland, Texas, in '97 I saw one and thought it was an Aston Martin (small city, not even that many Corvettes) from the side. Such a good color.

I don't understand what you said about the 3% stuff Red Planet, can you explain it in more detail? I'm interested in knowing.

Do you mean they just ran out of Bright Blue Metallic? And decided since they ran out, that they wouldn't make any more?

He's referring to 3% of production volume, I believe...

Well, that didn't really help Xed

I mean, why would they terminate the color if they just ran out of it? Maybe I'm just confused... I don't really know... All I know is I wish I had a Camaro in that color.

I think he's saying that if a color is not order on at least 3% of total production for a given model, it will be dropped because not enough people are ordering it to make it viable to continue to ofer the color...

I don't think there is anything mentioned about terminating a color if they ran out...

Come on guys...read what he wrote......

If you don't use the paint up, it deteriorates and you have to dump it.

Exactly... and 3% or less of production volume is the time frame where it lingers too long (from what I read anyway)

Um, the Gulf GT40 that won LeMans in 1968, perhaps the most famous GT40 ever, was baby blue:

Re: C6 Corvette, not in enough colors?

what I meant was that if the penetration of the color (the volume in which we build it) falls below 3%, it goes on "watch" for 60 days..if it does not increase, it's usually dropped shortly thereafter or by the next model year.

Paint systems circulate paint.....it deteriorates if it isn't used.....and, as a plant planning manager explained, metallics are especially difficult....because the metallic particles deteriorate.
No....it isn't a case of running out of paint......

by the way....that Corvette in the picture is Dark Bowling Green Metallic....a color offered in 2000 as I recall. That was another color I was very fond of...but again, it was very low volume.

The color I was referring to was Fairway Green....much lighter....not exactly Avacado......but not nearly as dark as Dark Bowling Green.

Re: C6 Corvette, not in enough colors?

Here are a few pics of a Fairway Green Corvette.

IMO, the best looking color ever sprayed on a C5... and that is saying a lot for me, because I am a HUGE Electron Blue fan!

Re: C6 Corvette, not in enough colors?

I still stand by my idea of a continually revolving "Special Edition Color." I.e., they run a random color short stretches (6 months?) at a time. They would use this "special" edition to encourage people to order the car in an uncommon color - Orange, Purple, Yellow, Color flopping paints, Turquoise, etc. Nothing would be unique about the car, except the paint color. Maybe it would cost a small fee ($200) extra. No restrictions on volume - fill all vehicle orders. The brocures would just list the standard colors and a blank square for "Special edition color" and "check corvette.com/specialcolor" or something so that you can find out the current (or next) color.

After a few years, you may end up with a very wide number of possible colors out in the field, and a lot of people would get a unique car.

Re: C6 Corvette, not in enough colors?

I like that idea WERM, but I would only change the colors every year to avoid confusion. I don't know Corvettes very well, but I do know Camaros of course, and they for the most part had rare colors for several years.
98-purple and gold
99-bright blue and hugger orange
00- pewter?
01- Mystic Teal and Sunset Orange
02- Sebring Silver and 35th Anni edition using Rally Red
