C6 assembly stopped
Re: C6 assembly stopped
Damn! Thats crazy that some of them feel GM isn't worth the trouble.. Suppliers usually would bend over backwards to get business from a company as big as GM.. Thats messed up!
Isn't that just how it is? When I started working as a co-op student for an auto supplier, I got put on a project for GM. I remember GM seemed to be regarded as this evil entity that came to the building every now and again to taunt and torture it's supplier minions.

Then buy a few %'s more than the final % you come up with to meet any potential demand. If there ends up being less demand than thought, then order less the next model year and save the extra nav systems left over for next model year

Very good! That's exactly what was done. I don't have all the notes in front of me...but the estimate was 30%.......(by the way, I think there were votes in this thread for 20% and 40%.......) Also, the one that said "make it standard".....didja happen to notice that the 2005 Corvette Coupe is $300 less than the 2004 Corvette Coupe base price??? So, putting navigation as standard is not a good idea......further, I'm with the guys and the gas station map......I am not a fan of navigation....anything that takes my eyes from the road is, in my opinion, not worth it. Besides...if I need to find something, I can always call OnStar!
Now....back to the original question.........
Guess what? You're all fired! Demand is at 75%!!!
The point I was trying to make is that decisions are never easy...and some of them are near impossible to get right.

Next year, more power.
Re: C6 assembly stopped
Like I said in my first post, I think there would be a spike in Navigation orders right off the bat, because these are Corvette fans that have been on waiting lists, and ordered the cars sight-unseen, for well over a year. They ARE going to order all the bells and whistles.
Expect that 75% number to drop significantly after the car strats trickling to people who aren't as fanatic.
Perhaps my 20% was low, but I'd still expect it to fall in line with the 30%...

I currently drive a 6 year old GS400... but you wouldn't really know it. I mean nothing significant has happened that is immediately noticable to the end user between my 99 and the current model. Sure the ground-up redesign will be out this january. But even then, it just looks prettier and will probably ride quieter and be more powerful, but we're talking about small to moderate improvements that have to be observed. I think that with nav systems in vehicles, it will be much more apparent on the surface as to how old a car is. Just like it would be VERY obvious to 95% of the people in the US within 30 of looking at my laptop as to whether it was a 1999 model or a 2004 model. Huge leaps and bounds have been made in capabilities, graphics, sound, and overall interface/asthetics.
I think that future nav systems in cars are going to increase in capabilities nearly as fast as modern day computers do, and likewise will become obsolete and drop in production cost just as fast.
Personally I think that's the way nav systems will be with most cars here within the next decade. It will be a "non-optional" feature in cars just for simplicity's sake for the manufacturur and because at that point, basic nav systems will probably be very cheap to produce due to the R&D costs and production costs decreasing quite a bit.
On the higher-end cars you'll just see nav systems with fancier features like realtime traffic data, or more detailed maps with realtime information on various points of interest, etc, etc.

How do you like my solution?

You know there are 200 million people in this country that are old, crotchty and set in their ways, and they hate computers. If manufacturors start ramming nav systems down the consumer's throat, look for a rebellion.
I don't like fooling with fouled up computers or want to fool with a screwed up computer in my car. Damn, I'm only 20 and already crotchty and set in my ways
