C6 assembly stopped
C6 assembly stopped
I just heard that the C6 assembly line has been halted due to problems with the 6-speed. Does anyone know what the issue is and when they expect to have it resolved?
Re: C6 assembly stopped
I'll ask on the Z06 Site

from digitalcorvettes.com:
Latest information regarding the Corvette plant shut down on 10/6/2004
Latest: It appears the assembly line is going again. But, we are still gathering info from sources on the 6-speed trans issue and delivery delays. We have no information on whether they are making 6-speed cars today, or if cars in the lot need to be fixed. Hang in there a little bit.
Corvette Assembly Plant Employee Hotline
(UPDATED: 8:20a CST 10/7/2004)
According to the Corvette Assembly Plant Employee Hotline:
PRODUCTION *WILL* RUN ON THURSDAY OCTOBER 7th, ALL EMPLOYEES ARE TO REPORT AT THEIR NORMAL REPORTING TIME.
From the Assembly Plant Tour Office
(UPDATED: 8:00a CST 10/7/2004)
They state that there are assembly line workers today, that it's business-as-usual, and there will be tours at 9am and 1pm today! She was aware of the problems yesterday but is not aware of any problems today. I am confirming this with other sources now, so hang in there! -Patrick
From the NCM
(UPDATED: 5:30P CST 10/6/2004)
The R8C museum deliveries are not cancelled, but we have postponed the deliveries of the C6 Corvette 6-speed for next week until we hear more on the problem with the 6-speed transmissions.
We will deliver all of the automatics next week and any automatics in the future once the line starts up. The assembly line had something break and they sent workers home today and they will not report tomorrow.
Once the mechanical problem on the line itself is corrected, my understanding is they will continue to build automatics.
Any Corvettes with automatic transmissions that have been built will be delivered at the NCM once we can get them from Allied.

(UPDATED: 5:30P CST 10/6/2004)
There is what they believe to be a problem with the 6-speed manual transmissions. It's my understanding from speaking with the NCM that a new truckload of transmissions are on the way to Bowling Green, KY - hopefully by Friday afternoon.
This appears to be a short term problem and I will keep you informed with the latest info on this issue.
Of course with the entire line down...yes it effects the production of the automatics too, no Corvettes are being produced at this time. WITH THE LATEST UPDATE, THIS IS GOOD NEWS AND HOPEFULY WE CAN MOVE FORWARD AGAIN!
How does this affect existing 6-speeds already delivered...good question! We are in touch with General Motors and will continue to update you with the latest information.
Sorry for the news folks, but this is the real side of retail production....just so happens it's on a car America loves so very much!
All updates will be here at digitalcorvettes.com!

Another example of how today's performance vehicles (the next Lightning was the last subject on this) are begining to outstrip the capacity of volume production transmissions?
Re: C6 assembly stopped
Problems happen in all assembly plants. It is not uncommon to build cars and then put them in holding until the parts are corrected. (the problems with components can be any number of things.....from parts out of spec to a rail car arriving late.....)
This is not a huge crisis. (well...it is to those who are waiting for their Corvettes...but these steps are taken so that the consumer receives a quality product.)
It is not a 'supply issue' in that there will be a long term shortage of transmissions........
I will say this: One of the hardest jobs I had was to "forecast" option penetration on vehicles. Think about it....some options, such as the navigation system on Corvette are new options, so there is not a lot you can look at data-wise to predict. You might take into consideration the volume in other vehicle lines...but most often, the buyers are different.
Let's take a poll....if you had to establish a percentage to build for the navigation system in the new Corvette...what would your answer be?
(i.e. for every 100 Corvettes built, what is the order rate for navigation system?)
Here's the hard part....undershoot it and you can't get enough....overshoot it and you suddenly have a very expensive option stacking up.......with penalties that you very well may have to pay to the supplier.......
So......any guesses???

It's tough for me to guess because navigation doesn't interest me in the least, but if it was standalone I'm going to say 35%.
