However, until it gets an AMERICAN ENGINE...forget it. Chinese built = inferior as far as I'm concerned...go to Wal Mart and have a look if you don't believe me.

I am sure its been durability tested, I am sure it meets or exceeds GM's standards, and I am sure its a state-of-the-art plant. But I will NOT spend a dime of my hard-earned money until GM can give me an engine built in the U.S. or Canada...period! I am already getting a backlash of customers looking for info on the Torrent and how it differs from the Equinox. When they ask whether the engine is the same "Chinese thing" in the Equinox, not ONE person has been ok with that, out of the 10-12 customers I have spoken with.

GM shot themselves in the foot there. I would buy a Torrent, and my father wants an Equinox to replace his TrailBlazer. However, GM won't get those two sales until a non-Chinese engine is in that car...period. Sorry to rant here, but the more my dad and I think about this the more mad we get...
I see where you are coming from, but it is the same 3.4L that has been the Aztek and other vehicles, just assembled in China. Tooling and parts are the same, it doesn't matter if it is put together in the US, China, or on the Moon. The out going Aztek was built in mexico.

The Pontiac should have received the 3.9L from day one. I guess you will have to wait until 2007.

Agreed. I really don't care where the engine is built but the 3400 is old...6 years old to be precise (no where near state of the art) 3500 base and a 3900 optional would be fine with me.

Lots of things are built in China--lots of things are built all over the world and most people don't know.

And all that does is continue to the deterioration of jobs in the U.S...something I will not contribute to if I can help it. I wish more people felt the same way. I buy American cars because I indeed do like them, but also because its supporting people HERE...something not enough people do. Just my opinion...but to me it taints the purpose of buying American if the most important component isn't.

Sure, lots of things are made in China...doesn't make it right. Like I said, I am sure its probably built as well as the North American 3400s...but I don't like it, and I'm already seeing customer backlash.

For all the bashing that Aztek takes (yes, I think it is one of the worst looking vehicles of all time), it could have been successful. Look at the Buick Rendezvous... same vehicle with more acceptible looks, even though it too is a bit awkward in shape, the styling makes it look pretty decent...

Yep, the Buick sold 3 times as many vehicles as it's bastardized twin.

The interior was not that bad at all. The vehicle itself styling wise was probally one of the worst in the history of the automobile ...

The 3400 is part of a trade agreement. 3400's come here, Cadillacs got there. Would you rather have a 3400 from here and no American built cars or parts sent to china? The press blows everything out of proportion, The refer to it as the "Chinese 3400" like it isn't the same as every other 3400. If it was made in Mexico, Japan, or Europe nobody would say anything. Saturn V6s were built by opel in Europe but you never read about the Vue with its European built DOHC V6. Why don't people complain about the Japanese build 5 speed auto in the nox/Torrent??? Neither the Aztek, GTO, Firebird, or Trans Am was built in the USA but people bought them and had no problem. Its all because China has a bad rep fro building cheap crap.

Next time someone talks about not buying one because the engine is Chinese built mention the trade of US built GM cars to China. I have a bigger problem with the 3400 being old, than being from China. Don't get me wrong the 3400 offers good power 210tq and great fuel economy (26mpg in nox) but it was in the 1993 Camaros and needs to be replaced across the boards by the new 3500.
