AWD Camaro OPTION, yay or nay?
Re: AWD Camaro OPTION, yay or nay?
Whoa whoa whoa...fine, I withdraw the "no snow in KS comment." And BTW jg, read where the CA kid is from...it ain't Northern. I am aware not ALL of CA has no snow. Geez people...so sorry. Ok, so KS gets snow...does it get as much as New England? THAT is the real point I want to make.
Any car can handle snow to a certain point. The point is AWD takes that point and moves it WAY up. teal98, do you follow the meaning of OPTION????????? I'm not asking for EVERYONE to buy the damn OPTION. Like I said, I wouldn't want it standard either, and in all likelihood I wouldn't buy it because I won't be driving my new Camaro in winter slop.
Guys, from my own personal experience doing a lot of snow driving in a lot of cars from Southern New England all the way up into Canada on a REGULAR basis, AWD on a Camaro I'd drive year-round would be awesome. I remember one snow storm down here where I had to move 100+ new Pontiacs and Olds' all over the lot to plow after we got almost 2 feet of snow...something that happened at least 5-6 times here last winter. The best cars on the lot? Vibe AWDs. You'd be amazed the difference between FRONT wheel drive and AWD. Take a Vibe AWD with 24" of snow extending 6-7 feet in front of it, throw it in D, and the damn things drove right through it. The FWD models? Spun like hell, and eventually got through. Granted, this is an extreme example, but it makes a point.
And to those who feel that this isn't in keeping with the "image" of Camaro, consider this. What IS the image of Camaro? V8, RWD, kick-*** performance, right? Great. Consider it done. But you know what? The market has evolved a great deal in 37 years. Why not have as an option AWD, something a slew of auto enthusiasts now embrace wholeheartedly (in case some of you have failed to notice this) to, here's an idea, help sales out? It won't hurt you, and it will help the image and marketability of the car.
God forbid we'd want a more popular car, guys...and as for the KS comment, I won't tread on Kansas again
Didn't mean to get everyone's panties in a bunch. But I'll tell you what...come on up to Burlington VT this winter...I guarantee they have a helluva lot more snow than a lot of KS. I couldn't believe the difference between VT and MA alone. Simple geographics dictates that even MA would have more snow than KS, more often assuming similar elevations. And from what I hear, there ain't no big lakes in KS to cause lake effect, and you guys are fairly flat which means no mountains either

I don't want to see an AWD only Camaro. I don't drive my F-bodies on snow, just like I don't ride my sportbike. I have a pickup for that.
Re: AWD Camaro OPTION, yay or nay?
I've had a change of opinion on AWD and Camaro. Afew months ago I was all for it, as an option. In fact, I thought it was a stroke of genius!
But following along Zeta developements.....and seeing how something promising can morph into something un-Camaro-like.....I've changed my mind.
I'd rather see GM's limited funds spent on other aspects of our car. Things like a marvelous chassis and great interior. Let's get the basics right...before someone signs off on a sh!tload of money for AWD.
Besides...I have no desire to see a 2 ton car with a Camaro emblem on it. Save that for the GTO and Riv.

But, again, if the platform already supports AWD, there is minimal to no money going into it...

See, I think by giving you the option of AWD, they make my RWD Camaro (and everyone else's RWD Camaro) worse.
Now maybe the RWD STS doesn't suffer for the AWD model, but that's a sedan that sits several inches higher than a Camaro. I'll bet if you talked to the engineers that designed it, they could list a few tradeoffs they had to make.
Re: AWD Camaro OPTION, yay or nay?
when i hear awd camaro all i think about is the many more imports that i'll smoke. no need for expensive slicks, amazing traction even on the road. i'm for it. granted it be sweeter if there was a button to dissengage the awd to make it rwd but i dont think that be possible. not that you'd need it but burn outs and donuts are fun at times. but overall if they made a awd camaro i'd buy it.
