Thumbs down to AWD heres why:

1. added weight
2. decreased fuel economy--GM would consider CAFE with a V8 AWD
3. If you buy it used--or warrant runs out--High repair $$$
4. No chirping the tires between gear shifts

The AWD idea doesn't befiet a F-body at all---totally wrong image.
Whats next AWD 'Vette--ugh

Whats the right image then? Evidently GM hasnt found it since the late 80's when they could sell the FBody.

Not a cahnce in hell. As others have said the price and weight would be counter productive to a new F-bod.

They had the right image, V8, RWD and performance. The problem was in the execution.

Why are so many against AWD on the F-body?
Yes, cost and weight are big factors.

But I think the biggest reason is because alot of F-body owners LOVE to rev the engine, drop the clutch, and walk the car out sideways while the rear tires are blazing. I, for one, love driving RWD for those reasons alone.

AWD will eliminate all that.

Another reason why I dont see so much why so many are strictly against it even existing is that in this scenario, Camaro would still be RWD, just have an AWD option or model.

You could still get your RWD car.

well, even if your car doesnt have awd, it's still going to bump up the cost
you have to make the car so that it accepts awd either way, and even if its a rwd car, it still costs money that will inevitably raise the other models cost
think about it: they cant tag a huge pricetag on an awd model (take all the cost of the awd designing, parts, labor and put it on there) and then have the rwd car w/o any of those costs which will make a huge $ gap between the 2

I find it hilarious that some of the same people that think an AWD option is a good idea are the same people that want to see the 5th Gen Camaro borrow from an existing architecture to keep costs down and rush it into production.

If you have an AWD option, you're going to have to develop a whole new AWD 2+2 platform and then derive an RWD option off of it. That is going to take millions of dollars to develop and push the production of the 5th Gen Camaro back to at least 2010.

There should never be a production AWD Camaro. It doesn't fit the marque. It doesn't fit Camaro's image. True Camaro enthusiasts that have been following the car and have been in love with it for more than the past 10 years will never buy it.

Now let's talk about something productive for the 5th Gen Camaro. Like a limited edition Z06 inspired coupe only version with a stroked 427 c.i.d. Gen IV V8. Hmmm, maybe we could call it Z2....

Yes, but see, here is the magic thing.... the platform that Camaro is likely to share is going to have an AWD system already developed ! Assuming it fits, there would be limited costs to have it available!

To all those who think AWD doesn't fit the "Camaro" name or idea and doesn't appeal to enthusiasts. Guess what, only a niche model in a relatively niche vehicle will dedicated to you anyway. For the Camaro to have any success, it will have to have appeal across the board, not just to enthusiasts. While I don't think AWD is neccesarily the answer to that, it's definitely something worth exploring to make the F-body more appealing to a larger audience.

As Xed just stated, the proposed platform the Camaro would be built on, would have an AWD model, so we wouldn't necissarily be re-inventing the wheel here. So peripheral costs for the AWD existance would be minimal becaus the platform is already there. I don't think anyone is saying make the Camaro only AWD, just have it as an option. RWD is great, but I'd love to have an all-weather car with the word "Camaro" on it. I'm sorry if that offends anyone...

BTW, in regards to the SSX,

Make that a two door, and I'm moving to Australia!
