I think the Xtreme S10 is pretty "sporty". I don't think anyone would mistake it for a Camaro-type vehicle. I'd say you're one of the very few who doesn't care whether a car has 2 or 4 seats, 2 or 4 doors, 4, 6, or 8 cylinders when choosing a "sporty" car.
Not really... they need to be real sports cars - not some "sporty package" or engine dumped into a commuter car. It should be RWD, with a nice manual transmission, 2 doors, an affordable price tag and prefferably a big engine.

I found three cars that roughly met my criteria: Mustang, Camaro, Miata (MR2 had no trunk, so it was a no go).

The Miata is a true sports car in the purest definition of the term.

Mustang and Camaro are technically "sporty" cars even though many would consider them sports cars in V8 form.

I just don't see the connection between a Miata and a Camaro or Mustang other than they're both RWD. How many people in the 80's seriously shopped both Firebird and Fiero? An even better example in today's market: Ask yourself, why does Nissan/Infinity build both the G35 coupe and sedan and the 2 seat 350Z on the same platform no less? Is this just redundant or could it be that perhaps they are attacking two different markets? Remember that they are also very similarily priced.

Markets Schmarkets...

The Z is a sports car. The G35 is a Luxury Coupe. Yup, different markets. Yet, if I had $30,000 to spend, I'd consider them both. I'd wager that a few people considered both a Fiero GT and a Firebird.

See - there's not a direct connection between a Miata and a Mustang, except that they are real performance cars that cost $25,000 or less.

But the indirect connection is that they are not FWD, people haulers converted to sporting duty with a bigger engine and tweaked susupension - they are purpose built performance cars. They offer different types of performance - but they are real perfomance cars centered on driving enjoyment. That's the connection.

If I really cared about back seats, I'd get a sports sedan. But since I've used the rear seats in my Bullitt only two or three times in two years, I don't really see the need - especially when its parked next to the VW.

As I said, you would consider them both. I don't think most people would, and the proof is in Nissan building both cars. The G35 offers very comparable performance to the 350Z but also offers the back seat. Why? Because it matters to people.

So how would you feel about a 2-seat 5th Gen Camaro then? I guess it'd still be the same car, right?

No, it wouldn't be a Camaro. But I'd still consider buying it.
