The all you wanted to know about the 5th Gen Camaro FAQ thread....
Do You Want It To Be Retro
I've been crusing this 5th gen board for a long time now, And I've noticed, most of you did-like the retro. But with the new mustang comming out, what do you think?? Personally I really likr the look of the 1st gen, and would love to see a retro 5th gen. I've seen alot of concept drawing posted here, and I like most of the ideas. I aso wounder if they do a retro car and there are a million of them driving around, will it loose it's unique-ness. Also do you think by the time the 5th gen comes will retro still be "instyle" my quess is by the time it comes out, everybody will be sick of the retro idea (if your not allready).
Just my thoughts. I've been hear a while, just havent posted that much, Its great hearing info from you guys.

The last Z28 vs Mustang GT comparisons were generally 5.2 vs 5.5 0-60, though it was more decicisive in the 1/4 mile.
Camaros smoking Mustangs is a fairly recent phonemon.

I think if you go back to the beginning, you will see that the Camaro (and Firebird) have had the upper hand over the Mustang most of the time. 1st gen-nod goes to Camaro as the 427 bested anything Ford had to offer. The 2nd gen cars were
far better performers than the Mustangs of that period. Mustang
II mean anything for performance? I think not. The late 70's Trans Ams were the best in class, even considered better than
a Corvette. The 3rd gen goes to Mustang even though in the
early 80's, Camaro and Firebird were very competetive, if not faster than the Mustang until the introduction of fuel injection on
the Mustang. The 4th gen cars, well, you all know about that. The Camaro and Firebird have rarely taken a back seat to the Mustang in performance.

But as far as Camaro beating Mustang in the 80s, the only years that happened was 1980 & 1981 when Mustang's top power was the 120 horse 255 V8 and the 140 hp turbo (and sometimes, self exploding) 4 cylinder. From '82 on till about '87 Mustang was generally quicker (alot depended on the model). 88 & 89 was pretty much a tie and 1990 onward Camaro was quicker.
Another thing worth considering was that Z28s and IROCs were sort of the Mustang Cobras of the day. What do I mean by this? In 1985, the Ford Mustang GT had a base price just under $9,500 (and the 5.0 LX coupes were just over $8,000
). Meanwhile, if you wanted an IROC that same year, it's price started at $11,700!! Like Mustang's Cobra today, you ended up paying alot just to keep up with the competition. Sort of explains why so many Camaro RSs were sold.

Now you understand why Mustang 5.0s became legendary in the 80s!

I think they were more like the Camaro SS's (
) of the day. Still the only 80's M*stang an IROC 350 or later Z28 350 owner really looks out for is the 5.0 5-Speed LX's and I think the 87-88's especially. But they are definetly beatable by L98's of the same time, its just that finding a 5.0 still stock is not easy.
How about cheap top performance for both cars in the next Gens?! I don't think I see that happening though.
