It's great that DAIMLERCX is making a semi-affordable (FUNNY how everyone on this site gripes about the 04 GTO price but no one's griping about the V8 DCX 300 price...) RWD V8 car. I for one am not a fan of the silly gangster-man styling and boxy ends. But obviously it has struck a chord, in the same vein as the (hideous IMHO) PT Cruiser.

Unfortunately, all is not well in 300 world. Road & Track for example, just did a big sedan comparo which included the V6 300 and a V6 CTS. The 300 came in 4th out of the six cars ranked/tested, and the CTS was #1. The editors praised the 300's ergonomics but then turned right around and complained about its flat, unsupportive seats. They were also disappointed with the road performance of the V6 for such a heavy car. Eg, the V6 CTS got to 60 mph in 6.6 s while the lumbering 300 needed 8.0 s. It's slalom was also worse than the CTS, 60 mph vs 64 mph for the CTS.

The R&T crew was truly tickled by the CTS:

...the Cadillac led the pack on a combination of outstanding performance and relatively reasonable price. In every test thers's one car that causes people to grin and say, "This is the sports car of the bunch." In this case, that car was the CTS.

...One of our editors pronounced it, "The most athletic-feeling car of the group, with firm springs, direct steering and a sticky tire at each corner of the body. It's what the BMW should feel like."

1. The idiots who run Chrysler's press fleet should never have released a 300 V6 for the R&T comparison test. Cadillac never released a SRX V6 for testing, only V8 models.

2. The Chrysler 300 was $10K cheaper than the CTS.

3. The seats in the LX cars are amazingly comfortable, but have less bolstering than I'd like. However, considering that "non-letter" 300 models lack a rear anti-roll bar, these aren't enthusiast oriented cars.

4. If you take the time to notice, the Mercedes sourced steering column and power seat controls are world class. Only the easy-to-use stereo and climate controls are old school Chrysler.

In contrast, the steering column in a CTS is from GM's corporate junk heap. Doesn't that steering wheel look suspiciously like the item in the Saturn Vue? Oh, and when was the last time you saw a GM car with top-notch switch gear?

5. If the 3.5 liter V6 remains weak compared to competition that's priced $10,000 to $20,000 more, so what? The motor that used to sound rough and gritty in the 300M has suddenly become quiet in the 300.

6. The 300C remains the car to beat. The base 300 is more than able to fend off the bottom-feeding domestic competition, not to mention more than a few "prestige" imports.
