5th gen intermediate V8.
5th gen intermediate V8.
There has been some buzz lately that the 5th gen Camaro will get an intermediate V8.
Some version of the LS2 seems to be the shoe-in for top V8. The current 5.7L LS1 will be history soon.
The 5.3L, 300hp, LS4 makes alot of sense as an entry level V8.....but a mildly tuned 6.0 may have some advantages over the 5.3.
What does everyone think?

Do you mean, intermediate as Camaro's top available V8??
I mean sure it might be OK for a base model, leaving room to go to a big V6 (or V6 supercharged) for econo, or a version of the Ls2 for top power...
As I said before, I believe the Vette should break some new ground with a more exotic powerplant, and leave the first 2 years' C6 engine to the Camaro, if it's reborn in 2007...It could feed off of an established aftermarket, and "hit the ground runnin"'..(What a 40th anneversary that could be!!..)

Not to side-track but anyone else noticed our post counter's screwed up???Mine went way back and froze on 670...what's up with that??
BTW, I like the idea of a detuned 6.0L, we could change a cam, bump the compression and ....well...

I think an intermediate V8 would be great.... but I don't want the price of the best V8 to be jacked up to justify it...
If they can offer the intermediate V8 significantly cheaper than the top model, but not have to inflate the top model's cost... then I am OK with it.
For example... how much more does an LS6 really cost to make and install over an LS1...

What again is the thinking behind an second V-8 option? Personally I don't see a reason for it. I don't understand the marketing behind it. Given the fact the Z28 (and SS) will have to be less powerful than the 'Vette, I wouldn't be surprized to see the LS-2's compression dropped to run on 87 Octane (btw, did I miss where it's stated that the new 'Vette will need 92/93 octane or is it a given with the compresion ratio?).
Realistically, I see this engine line up:
RS (or base car): high output V6
Z28: low(er) output V8 (340-350hp)
SS: high output V8 (375-380 hp)
What again is the advantage of another engine?

This worked very well in the 3rd Gen, as a good portion of RS buyers opted for the V8 upgrade...
This would be my take on why a intermediate V8 may be needed....
I'm just throwing numbers out, but say you're looking at this:
V6 (220HP)
V8 (360HP)
That's quite a leap. A lot of people want performance, but not necesarily the all out tire smoking rocket engine type. A 300HP V8 would be for those people.
Here's the question though....Would it garner enough customers that would have opted for a Mustang or something else?
Also, if the 5.3 and 6.0 aren't that much different in price, it serves as an excuse to artificially inflate the price of the H.O. model.
So, if you're going to do a 6.0 it of course needs to cost more than a 5.3. So, instead of just puting in the better engine in the top model, offer other desirable performance enhancements as standard on that model. Suspension, exhaust, HUD, wheels, tires, chassis bracing...some things that aren't available on the 5.3L model.

Using the 3rd gen as an example.....was there really much of a cost difference in the '83-'85 LG4 and L69 HO motor. I think the HO had a more expensive aircleaner and exhaust.....but it's bigger cam, higher compression and re-tuned carb cost no more than the LG4. You paid more for it, because it was wrapped into a performance package.
The intermediate V8 would be for the person who may not necessarilly be looking for all the "go fast" parts....but wants a nicely equipped Camaro with V8 for....say...$26-$27K.
I'm just wondering if people like that would percieve a 6 liter engine as too big and intimidating to be an intermediate V8?
