Re: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 First Test

You can still hit the drag strip or your local cruise in without the performance package where is probably where most of these cars will end up. I don't think you're getting as big of a "road course" focused crowd with this car a you would get with even say the Boss 302. Even hitting the local auto cross doesn't require hardware you'd need for lapping these ads around a track. As long as the hardware is optional I think you keep both the casual and hardcore camps happy. But who knows, maybe the bulk order GM paid to their suppliers made offering all of the upgraded hardware cheap enough to just be included across the board without sizable msrp impact?

How does a chassis dyno compare to the usual mustang/dynojet ones we see?
It has 662HP at the crank, not 700HP. These engines are certified now and will make within 1% of the advertised horsepower at the crank. Probably actually a fairly narrow distribution unless the car pulls power for some other reason.

This also brings back the whole notion of drivetrain losses that people have used to estimate crank power from chassis dyno readings. you would have to measure the engine on an engine dyno, then have a reliable chassis dyno number to calculate the drivetrain loss. Pulling percentages out of the air is not very precise.

And you have to keep in mind that chassis dynos may not even be all that precise or accurate, and that their output depends on a variety of factors. They are best used for tuning a vehicle, not estimating the horsepower of the engine.

Mustang and Dynojet are manufacturers that make chassis dynos.

But as to the car itself, yeah it is certainly fast and makes a lot of average power. The quarter mile times are proof of that.

Re: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 First Test

I'm bumping this because I wanted to add the Car and Driver review and didn't think it needed it's own thread:

C/D GT500 Test

Highs
Quick, fast, grippy; no guzzler tax; incredible output.

Lows
Could stand to lose a few pounds, Boss 302 is more rewarding to drive.

C/D TEST RESULTS:
Zero to 60 mph: 3.5 sec
Zero to 100 mph: 7.9 sec
Zero to 130 mph: 12.8 sec
Zero to 150 mph: 17.6 sec
Zero to 160 mph: 20.9 sec
Rolling start, 5-60 mph: 4.0 sec
Top gear, 30-50 mph: 11.1 sec
Top gear, 50-70 mph: 9.6 sec
Standing 1/4-mile: 11.8 sec @ 125 mph
Top speed (mfr's est): 202 mph
Braking, 70-0 mph: 155 ft
Roadholding, 300-ft-dia skidpad: 1.00 g

That 1/4mi is .2s and 1mph off from the last Z06 they tested. Of course they mention the Boss is more rewarding (easier) to drive. Ah well. One other thing of note is they talk about how 3rd gear is good till 140mph. Good news for people who don't know how to drive a manual. They can just put it in 3rd and drive around town that way all the time.

Re: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 First Test

Thats cool. That can apply to many cars though. The z06 did 0 to 160ish in 4th iirc on top gear

Hell, when teaching people how to drive a stick (has always been in a v8) I tell them look, if you dont know what gear to be in when your driving around, pick third and you'll be fine

2013 Shelby Gt500 are going 20 to 25k over sticker. Yea that's right 80k dollars! When you take that in effect ZL1 is not even in the atmosphere. I am patient tho, GM has got to move the next generation vette to supercar status so we can get down to business.

Sigh... ADMs, it amazes me how willing a fool is ready to throw their money away. Given the level of content compared to the ZL1, I consider an optioned out ( track pack, performance pack, recaros, infotainment) GT500 to be on the pricey side.

Still though there are dealers that don't gouge people, Riggins Ford in Poqouson Via doesn't charge an ADM, on the otherhand Hall Ford in Newport News will laugh you out of the stealership .

On the regular vette becoming a stratospherically priced super car, that will be a sad day. One of the corvettes charms is that it offers incredible performance at a great price. IMO I'd rather see the vette continue with a few rough edges at a reasonable price than see GM hop on the super car bandwagon with the regular vette.

Re: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 First Test

Many folks are getting GT500s at MSRP, some are not. Many folks are getting ZL1s at MSRP, some are not. The ADM's are hitting BOTH cars at about the same rate and the same amount.

Re: 2013 Ford Shelby GT500 First Test

Evolution Performance is currently at the track with their 2013 GT500. So far, the best is 10.02 @ 141

This is with the stock supercharger and no nitrous. Mod list is not known due to this being for a magazine article. I'm pretty sure they will not quit until they have a 9 in there.

Apparently they ran a 9.89@143mph.

And yes the mods are currently unknown.

Edit: This time might not be accurate. Not sure.
