Re: 2008 Nissan Skyline

I just got to thinking about something and would like to throw this out.

If this car really does end up at 3900lbs and tops out at 450hp, all others aside (911, Z06 ect), what about a "1st-gen formula" Z28?

I mean think about it. What if we really do get a top dog Z28 with 450-500hp, IRS, corner carver like the origonal that weighs in with everything else or a touch better? Just thinking...

Re: 2008 Nissan Skyline

It will still be half the price of a Skyline that isn't substantially better... At least not in a straight line. Will probably pull away in corners a bit...

Whey is everybody assuming 3,900+lbs and only 450HP for the GT-R?

I'm not suggesting the GT-R is going to be a light-weight and I understand the logic of using knowledge of the current G35 and extrapolating from there to discuss possible curb weight but why assume that there will be no weight-saving technology/production methods/components employed? I’m not suggesting that Nissan will go to the extreme measures with the GT-R that GM did with the ZO6 to drop weight but why assume they’ll do nothing to keep the weight reasonable?

Likewise in terms of HP there are at least as many rumors of 500+HP as there are that there will be around 450 so why assume the GT-R will only have 450?

Put it this way…forget nameplates for a moment and ask yourself if any company is going to undertake to build a halo performance car that already has a very rich heritage they need to maintain and build upon, do you really think the design engineers of that car are not going to get the HP and Weight (or for that matter, the entire car) where they need it to be to meet their performance targets?

Of course, there will be compromises made as there are with every car produced on an assembly line (even the ZO6) but that does not automatically mean that the designers aren’t going to do what’s necessary, within reason, to meet their goals.

One more consideration as far as HP - the rumors about the next generation Z car put the HP in the 400+HP range and 450 gets mentioned often…if the eventual HP for the next Z in anywhere in that range I can say with some certainty that Nissan is going to make sure that the GT-R has substantially more HP (just as GM is never going to let the base C6’s HP get too close to the ZO6).

Now, before you all come out to bash me again let me reiterate that I’m only suggesting that people shouldn’t underestimate the eventual performance figures for the next GT-R; especially if those underestimations are based only on rumors and especially if they are based only on the rumors that assume the worst in terms of HP/curb weight.

Re: 2008 Nissan Skyline

Do you think an awd turbocharged car and a naturally aspirated 2wd car should be apples to apples in weight? Both the power train and drive train will be heavier. I will be suprised also if Nissan attempts a 500hp production engine.

BTW: Is it okay for us to have our own opinions and guesstimates outside of yours RN?

Actually, I think the actual starting point was the G35 with AWD and the steering option to start judging possible curb weight of the GT-R…all I’m just suggesting is that while that’s an understandable starting place and even though the engine/drive train will be heavier than the G35 it may not be logical to assume that the GT-R isn’t going to find ways to keep the weight under control..

Why? Do you mean Nissan just won’t be willing to produce it or can’t???

Re: 2008 Nissan Skyline

Here, in the interest of fairness, I think we should help Nissan by giving some solid engineering advice relative to the drivetrain.

Here's is the best thing Nissan can do to ensure that they finally provide and engine that will enable the car to meet the horsepower expectations people will have:

Step 1: Start with a Nissan...

Step 2: ****-Can Crappy POS Nissan Boat-Anchor Claptrap Hamster Motor...

Step 3: Paint Nissan (Helps Car Gain Self-Respect After Years of Being Called Metro-Mobile)...

Step 3: Install GM LSx Power...

Step 4: Trailer Finished Car to Track (For Best Results, Use a Truck - Like a Ram, F-150 or Silverado)...

Step 5: Beat Mustang on Pinks!

WEDNESDAY, October 18th:
Robert Allison – VA (1990 Ford Mustang) vs. Aaron Spangler – PA (1990 Nissan 240 SX - with a GM motor in it...)

The next NSX will have a V10 then the Lexus comes out with the LF-A...it's a great time to be alive if you love cars....too bad a guy can only drive one at a time.

Re: 2008 Nissan Skyline

this will turn out like the 3000gts, Rx-7's, Supras... too much money for what it really is, then they'll have to stop production because they cant sell enough, then it will only be available in japan... again.

plus, the front end on that is nasty looking

The NSX (not sure about the Lexus yet) has already been confirmed for production but if you still don't belive it and want to put $50 on it I'll take the action.

I just dont see Nissan reliably making a high horsepower engine unless they buy them from someone else. I wouldnt trust it.
