Chevy has success with the relatively bold (for Chevy) but dated styling of the Impala, but decides to tone down and expunge certain Chevy cues and go with more generic styling for it's new volume model.

I suppose that you can make a case for either strategy. But I believe even people who are merely looking for an appliance, will be more attracted to the prettier appliance.

Personally, I would have liked to see Chevy stretching alittle bit on the new Impala, instead of falling back to the safety of it's risk-avoidance-at-all-costs thinking. I'm not talking about tearing up the rule book, like DCX did with the 300, just be bold enough to add some character, that's all.

For one thing, if I were in the decision making chain, I would have fought to retain some version of the round tail light theme for Impala. It made a powerful yet low key brand styling statement for the current Impala, and now that bold Chevrolet element is gone...replaced with what looks like (previous gen) Toyota-esqe generica.

Hmmm.. it's interesting that, at least by this assessment, Toyota is taking on Chevy's old approach to the car styling wise, and Chevy is taking on Toyota approach styling wise.

While the old Impala sold very well, the old Camry outsold it.

So, Chevy goes in the direction that Toyota had success in, and Toyota goes the direction that Chevy did well in, but got beat with.................. but Chevy is the one making the mistake????

Agreed!

Toyota could get away with "bland" styling due to the quality perception of the brand to the buying public. Chevy cannot afford to gamble on a bland product because it does not have the buyer backing or image like Toyota or Honda.

Cadillac has done very well with it's image from thinking aggressively in their styling. It has paid off.. Chevy cannot afford to be "bland" but seem to be going that route.

Exactly!

People didn't buy Toyotas because of styling, they bought them because of percieved quality. Now Toyota will endeavor to retain their current customer base and add to it, by attracting buyers looking for more percieved styling/image.

Chevy stretched just alittle on the current Impala, to give it a modicum of style....and that small effort, IMO, paid off in spades. I just wish that Chevy would have stretced that itty, bitty, little bit on the new Impala also.

Personally, I agree with the both of you... I'd rather see a more exciting shape (though the only real problem I have with the 06 Impala is the lower front fascia... makes the whole front end look extremely bland, where the MC does not with the same headlamp setup)

However, I think history has shown that in this class... bland sells best.

As a foot note, I do not think the 07 Camry shown here really stands out in a crowd anyway... but that's just my opinion on what I see here....

at the washing machine comment

and yea, i still say if the impala had the headlight case cut off where the headlights are, we would not be saying it was too bland

Hey, if it gets that 280hp 3.5L, then we got another muscle car on our hands.

...Unlike anything with the SS symbol tacked on.

So a 280 hp V6 in a Camry (which I don't think will see it; they'll probably detune it to 260 or something) is a muscle car, but the 303 hp, 325 lb-ft small block in the Impala SS is not?

Re: 2007 Toyota Camry

Still doesnt look to be an exciting car by any means if thats anywhere close to what the real thing is. I'm with Z284ever, I was kinda hoping the new Impala would've retained its oval taillights. They were a signature styling element for the car.

And whats up with the Camry enthusiasts??? I laughed when I read the one guy's signature with his 05 Camry and the words "Fear it" beside it. And the one dude that photochopped a Hooters girl posing on his old bland Camry? Too funny these guys

Thats what I was thinking and methinks that a Cobalt supercharged SS would make mincemeat of this Camry as well. And so would a 06 Monte SS. And a Trailblazer SS.

So....

Re: 2007 Toyota Camry

I find those pics difficult to tell anything about the car.

They are dark and blurry.
