Holy ****, the Malibu is number 20??? How the **** did that happen? I thought those cars were crappy, and only old people and rentacar places bought them.

Some people will buy anything.

Looks like pick-up truck sales are down. The F-series and the Silverado both off 9.5%, Ranger off 17.9% but the Dodge up 15.4%. You knew the Dodge would be up with the redisign.

The pickup truck market has become increasingly "fashion conscious." For alot of half ton buyers it has more to do with image than any serious cargo requirements. Dodge carried the old body style too long, and now their finally catching up in sales again. It appears you can't go wrong by styling a fullsized truck to look as big and bloated as possible.

Anyway, the one thing this chart proves is the days of selling 300,000 units/year of a single passenger carline are over. With the exceptions of the Camry and Accord, cars just don't move units anymore. I wish for the best of luck in moving 200k of the new 2004 Mustang.

I think a good portion of the reason cars don't move 300,000 units anymore, is because there is way too much variety.

First example: Grand Prix & Bonneville. Both are the same size, same brand, same drivetrains, same chassis. What's the purpose. A few years ago, Chevy ran Impalas alongside Luminas. Another example is the Cavalier coupe & Camaro. The Cavalier coupe is in the same market as the base Mustang (minus the RWD), meaning youth & those wanting a simple sporty coupe. I'm sure Cavalier would take a good chunk out of any gen5 sales.

Just my 2 cents.

Are you saying that units sold would be up, if there was only a Grand Prix, with the available options of both cars, as opposed to the way it is. In other words, it would be the same as adding their sales numbers together, since they are essentially the same car?

I hope that made sense.

Arrow

I just noticed that if you add up the GM full size pickup sales together, you get 702,474 compared to Ford's 681,883. Didn't it used to be that Ford usually won that match, or am I thinking of (Camaro + Firebird) < Mustang sales?

I personally wonder why GM bothers to build so many seperate platforms when they're all roughly the same size? If you threw the Grand Am into the equation, and ignored the lack of sound deadener and rear headroom, you'd wonder why anyone would buy either of the larger cars?

The passenger car has died, and I don't think anyone has noticed yet.

The Ranger dropped out. It was ranked 9th at this time last year. Sales on them have dropped 18% this year.
