Ford Gains Car, Truck Market Share For Q1 2003
06 May 03
Robert Lane
While many analysts routinely criticize Ford's aging product line, Ford was the only U.S. brand of the Big Three to gain market share in the first quarter of 2003 (January-March) in both the car and truck segments. Ford car market share was up 0.3%. GM's car market share was also positive (0.2%) while Chrysler was off (-0.4%). On the truck side, Ford was up 0.7% while GM fell (-3.2%) with Chrysler also falling (-0.3%).
Ford placed two vehicles in the top ten best selling cars and four trucks in the top ten best selling trucks to end the first quarter. The F150 continued to grossly outsell the Chevy Silverado and Dodge Ram pickups despite public knowledge that a new design is just around the corner.

Also in today's news/believe-it-or-not-files (sit down for this one), the Chevrolet Corvette OUTSOLD Monte Carlo during the month of April.
http://www.autonews.com/article.cms?articleId=43504
GM's car-dependent divisions had a tough April. Saturn car sales dropped 29.8 percent, Pontiac car sales crashed 32.3 percent, and Buick car sales sank 35.8 percent.
But the Chevrolet Corvette was a bright spot. Corvette sales nearly tripled in April compared with a year ago, propelled by 0 percent loans for five years. The Corvette outsold the Monte Carlo last month, 6,249 to 5,721.

Hmmm... very interesting that 3 of the most-bashed GM cars oin this board are in the Top 10:
Impala, Cavalier, and Malibu.
As for the Corvette outselling Monte Carlo thing, well, I look at it liek this: Corvette has pretty much been excluded from the incentive things until this last round. So, a lot of people jumped on that to get a Corvette. Also, people now know that monte Carlo SS will offere the supercharger this fall... so some may be holding off for that.

I hate watching the Silverado get trounced so soundly by the F150. Bring back the 2002 design and stop the bleeding!
On the other hand, the Trailblazer is sneaking up on the Exploder. I'll bet if you add up GM's 4-door triplet's sales, they will outnumber Ford's 4-door triplet's sales.

Just imagine how high up that list the Impala would be if the Impala came in 3 body types : Sedan, Coupe, and Covertible and all the sales counted under the Impala name.

I like the idea of differenitating the sedan from the coupe... different sheet metal, different interiors and different names = more variety.

True, but what does it really matter where they are on the list besides the answer to some future trivia question?

Impala & Monte Carlo Combined: 31,862
Accord (entire line): 32,111
Taurus: 33,824
Chrysler's LX (entire line): 18,443
Impala will outsell the Accord.
What's worth noting is that just the Impala alone comes within 25% of selling as many cars as all of Buick! (25,448 Impalas were made in April, while every Buick made totalled just 29,626)
That does makes a intresting trivia question.

Impressive IMO, to have the Chevy Impala, Cavalier, and Malibu in the top 10 car sales.
GM usually doesn't do well on a individual model sale basis. Because of their sistership sharing of brands they usually have smaller individual sales. So while the F150 does sell much more than the Silverado, when you add the Sierra to the sales things get much closer, although still in Ford's favor.
As for Explorer vs. Trailblazer sales, there again you need to add the Envoy, and Bravada sales.
Individually GM's lines are not impressive but as a whole they are more than the rest.

i can see how the vette outsold the monte carlo... the vette is dead sexy and one of the biggest performance bargains ever
the monte carlo is slow, and arguably the ugliest car in production right now no matter the origin...
and as for the j-bodies, malibu, and impala... they sell well because they are cheaper than the competiton, plus dealer insentives
