2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP

2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP
The Detroit News 04/13/05
author: Paul Lienert
(Copyright 2005)

Spied on a recent engineering test trip in the mountains, this prototype of the new Pontiac Solstice sports some additional high-performance hardware, including dual exhaust pipes and an intercooled engine.

The high-output model, slated to follow the introduction of the 2006 Solstice by a year, is rumored to be powered by a supercharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that will make around 200 horsepower and will be harnessed to a six-speed manual transmission.

The standard Solstice, which Detroit auto show crowds adored in concept form in 2004, debuts this fall.

The two-seater will be outfitted with a 177-horsepower four-cylinder engine and five-speed manual gearbox, four-wheel disc brakes, 18-inch wheels and tires, a CD player and a glass rear window -- all for $19,995.
Is it just me or would this thing have to have more than 200 hp to even make sense? Who is going to pay thousands of dollars extra for only another 23 hp? I guess maybe if it's part of some bigger all around performance package. I hope the rumor on the 200 hp is wrong by at least 25 hp, though.

The article is wrong on several points. Other reports of a high po Solstice are also off the mark. The best thing to do is just wait and see.

Re: 2007 Pontiac Solstice GXP

That article isn't even close. Sounds like they just assumed that the car would get the supercharged engine from the Ion RL/Cobalt SS. Which is not the case.

EDIT: Reread it, and he does say "rumored" (too bad the rumor is false). Big surprise that it is Paul Leniert, though... :blah:

It is also rumored to get a Turbo 2.0 and rumored to get a Turbo 2.4L. 253HP has also been a number kicked around.

This is going to become the new "poor man's Corvette".

Isn't adjusting "boost" one if the easiest ways to make more HP?

On a turbo it is. The current SC 2.0 Ecotech has been out over a year and there are still absolutly no aftermarket upgrades available for it. A few companies are working on it, but since the ECU is locked and the injectors come from the factory nearly maxed out, extracting more power isn't all that easy or cheap.
