Everybody I know that has had an Altima...has had problems with it. Just because it's from Japan don't mean it's reliable. And apparently just because it's from Toyota doesn't mean it's more reliable than a Mercury by much.

But this is good news. Hopefully if this keeps up for another 2-3 years it will start making people realize that they can't bash American cars on reliability any more. Detriot just needs to keep the quality up. Keep coming out with appealing designs and keep the power coming...and they should be well on their way to coming back.
I was a big fan of mid/late 90s Nissans and a big opponent of their new models. Altima, Japan? The 02+ Altima (the one where they started having bunches of quality issues) was designed and engineered completely in California, built in Mississippi, and made of almost north american sourced parts. The new Altima, bash it all you want, is far more American than it is Japanese in the least... oh, except the name on the badge.

But many of you same guys will turn around and call a Saab a valid domestic vehicle because GM owns them, despite the engineering, design, and production of most of them still being in Europe.

I just lost a lot of faith in that survey.
The Camaro is a valid entry on the list:
The study, which measures problems experienced by original owners of 3-year-old (2002 model-year) vehicles

I lost faith because there's no way the Camaro was the #2 most reliable "sporty car" made for a 3 year period.

Sounds about right to me.

I believe some people base their experience on a single episode of buying a used, 8-year-old car of questionable pedigree and paying too much money for simple repairs. This, of course, represents the entire universe of F-bodies.

(Tell this to the current owner of my 1989 IROC convertible, at 189K miles ON THE ORIGINAL CLUTCH.)

Of course, this does not represent the entire universe of F-bodies either. This is just to illustrate that for every anecdote, there is an equal and opposite anecdote.

As far as the JD Power survey is concerned, I think the relevance of the results is directly proportional to their impact on your current car preference . . . at least in some people's eyes.

The reason all the people on this board have problems is that their cars are 10 years old, with 100k miles, with mods, and they beat them senseless.

I've put 30k(from 41k to 72k) on my car in 2 years and the only problem I've had has been the warped rotors(my fault), blown Monsoon speakers, and the crankshaft position sensor. I've never been stranded and will have to say that my car has had fewer problems than my mom's 2000 Avalon in the past couple of years.

I had my 99Z28 M6 for 3.5 years of daily driving... went from 2 miles to 45,xxx miles... I had some issues with a few squeaks and rattles and various other annoyances, but the only dependability issue was a failed power window motor.

Re: 2005 JD Power Vehicle Dependability

In over 4 years (but admittedly only 17k miles), my Z28 has received one PS pump, one water pump, 2 A/C re-charges and uh, uhm, uh......

Likely the A/C wouldn't have been in such rough shape if I used it more often to keep all the seals tight. I'm happy. Quite happy, actually...

My '02 WS.6 Trans Am = 0 problems in 3+ years of ownership. It's not a Camaro, but damned close.

I just noticed that

My 2000 SS had the Pass Key system go bad, but for the minor flaws the LS1 and 6 speed well made up for it.
