2 speed supercharger

Since superchargers are great for low-RPM boost but peter out at higher rev ranges more suited to a turbocharger, Atonov has fitted a small two-speed automatic gearbox to its centrifugal supercharger, allowing for peak power at all speeds.

Re: 2 speed supercharger

Very interesting concept. This could make a s/c vehicle more competetive with a good solid twin-turbo vehicle.

I'd still rather go with a twin screw

Why? It sounds like this supercharger could very well have a better area under the curve than any twin screw. Is it just the whine of the twin screw you like?

Why hasn't this been done before? It's not like the Rolls Royce Merlin X had a two speed supercharger in 1935 or anything

I dont know. It just seems like one of those "No duh" type of things. Gearbox on the supercharger. I mean, its not like its some superjump in technology.

Re: 2 speed supercharger

how about somehow rigging a CVT type transmission on a supercharger so it will always deliver your desired peak boost throughout the entire rev range?

Money, and the technology to fit these things under the hoods of modern cars.

Imagine a CVT that can handle the RPMs and torque loads handled by a typical supercharger with minimal (or ideally zero) belt slip. How small do you think it could be built? And how much would it cost to build it in that size?

Sweet idea either way.

I thought PCM access was just around the corner Should be a big help to our cars. This will be a good summer for the IRL and Cobalt SS.
