Fuel Cells

Is anyone on here running a fuel cell? I'm probably going to be going to one here soon as I do not think I can run a sump on the factory tank and keep the Mufflex exhaust, and at the same time it would be nice to have a larger fuel tank. Me and a friend have been looking and doing some research and I did find a 'drop in' cell just wondering how everyone is mounting their's or if anyone was using this one from Fuel Safe

Also if you are using one, what size is it? Pics would be great too!!

Thanks

well I am getting one this winter, fully installed. Its only costing 600 for the tank, and everything installed. It seems rather steep to pay 1,500 for a cell. I know most guys don't go over 700... The average being 450-600. Looks like a great unit though! You might also want to check out the LS1 Speed drop in unit. Quite a bit less but it is also a 14 gal setup.

From all of the pictures and information I have seen about the one from LS1 Speed it is not a true fuel cell but just a fabricated gas tank. A true fuel cell has to be approved by what the FIA and/or SCCA and has to meet certain crash standards. Everyone one I have seen comes with some kind of bladder and foam insulation to keep fuel sloshing down and keep it in the tank if it was to be hit. I believe that is why the Fuel Safe ones cost as much as they do.

While it might not be going into a specific class at this time, if I am going to upgrade stuff on the car I would like it to be legal once it is done so I will not have any safety issues at the courses during tech.

Didn't even think if the LS1 Speed cell is approved....

Custom fab job I would still think would be cheaper. Approved cells can be had for 300 on up. Installing them isn't all that hard if your handy with sheet metal. I guess I am just a cheap *** when it comes to that, I just couldn't spend that much knowing that I could get a comperable peice that is just as safe for that much cheaper. Then again, my route dosen't look as purty.

Remember those prices are retail....places like RacerPartsWholesale have them for close to 1/2-3/4 of that price.

I did talk to the guys at Fuel Safe this morning and they will pretty much make anything you want and it will be about the same as paying retail for one of their cells. So if you make a drawing, mock up...what ever they will make it for ya.

The foam needs to be replaced about every 5 years, and the bladders every 10 just as pecautionary measurements.

Josh, I still don't know why you would spend the money for the LS1Speed tank if it isn't legal and isn't any different than a stock tank with just a simple sump in it. It would be much easier to just sump your stock tank and be done with it.

The LS1 speed tank is geared towards straitline racing. AFAIK, it is not internally baffled like the ATL and fuelsafe units

No I'm not looking at having a LS1 Speed unit installed... I brought it up becuase that is what some guys have been doing - not me. I just thought the question should be asked. I am having a custom fabbed setup done. Trackside Racing Supply has a large lineup of fuel cells, thats where I plan to get mine.

Sorry for the confusion.
