Wheel cleaning

Traded my stock TA wheels for these. Not sure how long they have been sitting with this grime on them but i need to clean them. Whats the best stuff to use?

Anyone know what american racing wheels these are? They are 17" with 245/45/17 tires.

Re: Wheel cleaning

Fred, i did notice on AR website that there are different finishes. How can i tell if these are chrome or polished?

Also, any ideas on cleaning them?

Re: Wheel cleaning

Chrome will generally stay "shiny". Polished, if not clear coated, will oxidize and discolor, particularly if exposed to salt on winter roads. My guess would be polished, without clear coat. But it's not obvious from the photo.

Get some Mother's Billet Metal Polish, use a soft rag, and see what comes off. I doubt it will do a lot, but it may clean them up a bit. After that, you will need to invest in polishing equipment.

Re: Wheel cleaning

I have been reading that steel wool and cleaner works well. Anyone tried this before? Im pretty sure they are polished aluminum.

Re: Wheel cleaning

I never tried steel wool. I've always used increasingly fine wet sandpaper and then buffing compound. If you google "polish aluminum wheels with steel wool" you get mixed results. Most of the negative comments relate to leaving some steel particles behind which will corrode, induce electrolysis and possibly cause scratches when the wheels are polished the next time.

Re: Wheel cleaning

So you determined they are chrome, and not aluminum?

Re: Wheel cleaning

No i think they r polished. I will polish them up after cleaning and if i cant, i will get them powdercoated. Either way they were a good deal for my stock wheels.

Re: Wheel cleaning

I think you have to be careful which one you use. Probably ate into the clear coat.

Re: Wheel cleaning

Next time your at a gun shop pick up a can of " SAFARILAND BREAK FREE C.L.P "
Its not going to fix the faded clear coat but it will take the dullness out the milky look
