What color calipers? Red Z/28 with Stock Wheels

I have some free time and have decided to paint my calipers and add "CAMARO" decals.

What color should I do them and what color decals?

What method and paint types have worked best for long lasting and good looking painted calipers?

Do I have to remove them and if so, I there a certain procedure for that?

Brent, I know you'll be checking in, if so, how long to get those caliper decals?

Thanks everybody.

I just picked up a red Camaro, I was going to paint the calipers red with the chrome camaro decals and then put a few coats of clear over.

Here's a walk through brents walk through as a matter of fact

On the decal application you just have to put the decals on right after the paint dries to the touch, then you can spray clear over the paint and decal.

Cool deal, so red calipers with white, silver, or chrome overlays? I want to get these ordered asap. Or would black look better? Thanks fella's.

Where and what paint did you guys use? Any clearcoat works? Do I have to do things differently since its going to be 20* outside?

Is the easiest way to do it, to just leave everything on the car and mask the rest off?

Also, I really want to do this type of painting where half is black still, I think painting the pad and everything red, looks, well bad.

I personally would go with black calipers and maybe silver or red decal. When i did my LT1 setup i just used brake cleaner and a brush to clean them and painted them with high temp engine paint. Once they were dry i clear coated the crap out of them. On my LT1's i just removed the caliper from the spindle but left the brake line still attached. I just wired the caliper up out of the way and painted it. It didn't work to well my car got covered with over spray and i had to clay bar the crap out of if. They lasted close to 2 yrs until i went to the LS1 setup. I painted my LS1 setup the same way and all is good.

Thanks Z95m6, I think black and red are still even considerations, but the decals I am almost sure are going to be silver or chrome. Black and red ones dont seem to meet my standards. Reflective, I am not sure about. My future wheels I hope to get will be 10 or 5 spoke Chrome SS's, if that helps any. I know black will be more subtle, and red more outstanding, but its tough making the decision, cause you know you dont want to have to try to strip them and do it again. If anyone has pics with Salad shooters or any where for that matter on an LT1, it would be greatly appriciated.

Also how do you like those LS1 brakes? Worth the money, time, and effort?

I personally think red calipers on a red car would be too much red in my opinion but to each their own. I've seen a local car that was red with red calipers and you can't really see them all that well with the salad shooters but its a good mod for when you get some wheels that really show off the brakes. As for the LS1 setup it was one of the best mods for the money i have done. I bought them off ebay for $165 shipped. It came with everything i needed to do the swap. Even the brake pads that came with them were in great shape. All i did was swap them on. It took me 4 hrs with a trip to the parts store and working by myself. It was a very easy install if your stock stuff isn't rusted. Now when i slam on the brakes the car nose dives hard and wants to bang your head on the dash. I love them. Very cheap, and very effective.

Perhaps I'll have to look into those LS1 brakes as a future mod, mine stops decent, but being the compulsive person I am I always need more. Red on red might be too much, I am going to have to look at alot of pics to make up my indecisive mind.

On the decals you think silver or chrome or another color would look best? I need to get them ordered soon. I like silver and chrome, or a variation between those two. Red and Black just dont do it for me.

I think Chrome would look good. I'm gonna order some Chrome decals from brent for my black fuel rail covers that i'm filling in and sanding smooth.

Re: What color calipers? Red Z/28 with Stock Wheels

Nice, well I know for sure I want the decals I use on the calipers to match whatever rear CAMARO inserts I decide to use. A type of Silver/Chrome or SS one. And that depends on what I want to do about the Black Z / 28 badges and red bowtie...I thought about old school ones or perhaps none. Sigh...so much to balance. I need someone else to decide for me, I try to get my fashion design major G/F to help, but she isnt as enthusiatic as I am about the Camaro. Thanks everyone.

Its definately going to be red calipers with black brackets. Now just for the decal color, silver or chrome...and this is going to be tough. Like I said got to match the overlays and badges on the rest of the car. GMMG seems to use silver on the calipers and polished SS on the rear panels. But as far as the badges, idono.

Re: What color calipers? Red Z/28 with Stock Wheels

Do you have any color combos going on now with your red car? You can do several different themes but whatever you decide that is what I would carry forward to the rest of the car. With a red car you have several options

* Red calipers with black, silver, white, chrome CAMARO lettering. Whatever you decide here you'll want to continue with the rest of the theme... or whatever you decide for the rest you'll want to continue for the calipers What I mean is that if you want rear CAMARO inserts in silver then I would do the caliper decals in silver and other items in silver as well.

* Another cool combo is red with white accents. If you do white rear inserts you could paint the calipers red and do white CAMARO caliper decals. But, here IMO it takes a number of items in white to make it look good.

* If you want like black rear inserts (a little more subtle) you could do your calipers black with red CAMARO lettering... that looks pretty cool too. Or, if you do chrome rear inserts you could then paint your calipers either black or red and add the CAMARO caliper decals.

You have a lot of options But, whatever you do I'd continue the theme throughout the car. For example, don't get white rear inserts and silver caliper decals... IMO

Yes, I agree on the continuing theme throughout the car. It's tough till you see it in real life. Although GMMG's ZL1 has the vette calipers and polished SS inserts in the rear and it looks ok. I am still trying to decide but I appriciate your help IMMENSELY. Thanks.

Its done, LS1 front brake kit with VHT Caliper Paint Red calipers, Black brackets, and silver Brent Franker CAMARO decals. It really brings out the look of the car from the side. It looks damn good. Thanks everyone and Brent. Now on to the rear inserts...
