Weird question about pass side air bag...
Weird question about pass side air bag...
Is there a way to remove the panel that covers the passanger side airbag (in a 1996 trans am), without blowing the airbag (I don't think this will blow the airbag, but I wanted to check, just in case)...And then, does anybody know how to remove it? And also, (the weird question), does anybody have pictures of what the dash looks like once the airbag has been removed? I'm trying to see what kind of space is behind it.
Re: Weird question about pass side air bag...
Dude... I wouldn't even think of messing with it unless you have a Haynes manual or something to tell you how to do it. I'd tell you how to disable the airbags the simple way, but I don't know if the simple way works when you are actually HANDLING the airbag. Nope, nope,
I don't want to think of what could happen. Take it to a Pontiac dealership or something and tell them to do it.
I can tell you that if you do mess with that area, the airbag is VERY likely to blow. In most cars there are 3 airbag sensors in the dash. One is on the driver's side somewhere, one usually behind the radio, and one usually above the passenger side glove compartment. So don't do it unless you know what you are doing!

Ok first of all, if you're going to mess with the air bag, disconntect the battery take out the fuse etc etc...just to be safe
2nd if you are talking about that rectangular panel that you see over the bag on the dash, you know that thing is part of the dash right? It's kind of like a perforated line for when it blows.
It won't look any different without the airbag in there but if you take that panel off I can tell you it will look like a 96 trans am dash with a big hole in the passenger side.

I don't remember where I've seen it, but someone got rid of the airbag and put a TV in it's place, I've also seen one where someone put a laptop mounted where the hole was.
Re: Weird question about pass side air bag...
If it's the same design as the Camaro, it's attached to the dash as Pyro97 said... It's scored around the panel and you'll have to either punch it out with your fist like I did, or cut around the section with a knife.. There's also a strap that runs the width of the panel you'll need to cut off.. It keeps the cover from flying off once the bag is blown... It can be done.. I did it to a Camaro in a wrecking yard once... Hardest part is getting the dash up and out far enough to get to the rear of that panel... If you want to know how much room is in there, go on ebay or someplace and look for a passenger airbag for your car.. That's the room you'll have.
