Thumbs up Tire recommendations, please.

Well tomorrow is my birthday, and my wife just informed me that she ordered me a set of C5 wide five spokes from SLP for me But they won't arrive for another 10-14 days

What tires (size/brand) do you all recommend for the 17x8.5/18x9.5 combo for my Z? I want wide and cheap but not too wide where the tire looks pinched on the wheel, if you know what I mean.

I have stock salad shooters right now, so what modifications do I need to do to the new wheels to make them fit?

edit: oops, corrected wheel width.

I've got those wheels on my SS, but they are 18 x 9.5 for all four. I've got 285/35/18 tires on them...Michelin Pilot Sport A/S. They aren't cheap though...about $300 a tire, but damn they are nice.

if you want cheap go with kumho's. I've called a few places around for some tires today and they are greatly cheaper then others. I'm looking for 275/35/18's. They wanted 260 canadian a tire for Kumho ecsta(sp?), as oppossed to the michellin pilots, $497 and the yokohama AVS's for $428

all canadian prices.

I'm gonna read a few reviews about the kumho's then might pickup 4 of them. I'll link some reviews here if you want.

Please do, 1999V6.
I did a little digging myself, and found Kumho's to be quite reasonable. I really like the looks of the Kumho Ecsta MX's. They look really aggressive. And best of all, all 4 can be had for less than $600 (US) total (ofcourse before mounting and balancing and taxes) And best of all, they are Y speed rated to boot! I just want to hear some people's experiences with Kumho's

Did I just answer my own original question up above?

You will be able to find quite a bit of info on the Kumho's if you search the board - they are pretty highly talked about - but is mostly the Ecsta Supra 712's.

My take on them (the Ecsta Supra 712's) - they are a good tire, especially for the price.
I have them in 245's on my car right now, and they quite well. They ride almost 100% silent, which is nice, they have a smooth ride, they have a nice tread life (if you treat them like tires), and the performance is good. They could stand a little better take off traction, but they are fine - my buddy has 245's on his Trans Am as well - and he just stepped down to that from a 275 I believe - and he has better traction than what he had with the wider Sumitomo's.

I like them, and will probably buy them again - but my next set will be something different - just because I am kind of tired of the tread pattern - I want something more..."Ferrari". Although - fwiw, I am looking at the Kumho MX Series as well - so I am pleased with my service from my current Kumho's obviously.

I can recommend the Ntitto 555. These tires did very well for me at the track and I love the tread appearance. I think the 245/40xr17 was only 125.00 at Discount Tire.

you "might" have to grind the inside of the center hole on the c5 wheels to get them to fit over your camaro hubs !

I have Nitto 555's on my Y2K's. Front: 17x8.5 with 255/40/ZR17 Back: 18x9.5 with 285/35/ZR18. I think it looks perfect. I paid somewhere around $750 for all 4 new tires.

I'm a little upset . Every tire store I checked cannot get Kumho Ecsta MX's for 3 weeks. And as far as Nitto 555's they don't stock the size I need (Corvette stock sizes). What is up with that? Don't Vette owners need tires too? I guess I'll have to hold off for a few weeks and just stare at my wheels and use my imagination. Guess I may have to special order the tires.

Chuckys95, I thought I had heard the center hole was too small so today I test fitted the rear wheels and I modified the hole. I do have one area of concern though. The wheel is going to sit about one inch from my lower control arms and inner wheel well. Will the added width of the tires cause a rub on anything? Any other sizes to buy that will look good and not throw off my speedo and not rub?

Try Sumitomo HTR+ from TireRack. They are around 100 a piece and have good ratings on their site.

lol! you outta see how close my rear tires are to the control arm! but they do not rub.
but the one thing that helps alot is an adjustable panhard bar, especially if your car is lowered.
