Tint Question

I just got my bonus at work and am doing a few mods to my Z. One being tint. I have no clue about anything. I know that the lower the grade, the darker it is and that in NC, the limit is 35%. How much should I tint, how do I choose a good place and what is a fair price for side and rear windows? Anything else I need to know?

Make sure you go to a place that uses 1 big piece for the rear window. Some places use 3 small pieces and eventually they will separate and look awful. I have been quoted $150 from 2 different places.

Go to the shop and look at some samples.

35% = light tint
20% = SUV rear window/rear side window tint
5% = limo

Take a look inside a new SUV at a dealer and you'll be surprised how easy it is to see through the tint.

They all look fairly dark from the outside but are surprisingly light from the inside. I can't really tell a difference between 35 and 20% windows looking from the inside. Even 5% seems like the only window that's actually tinted.

The human eye is like a camera. It adapts to light. So something that's 5% (letting 5% of the visible light in), your eye will see more. That's why the light hurts so much when you wake up in the morning.

35% doors, 20% rear
or
35% doors, 5% rear

I prefer the darker stuff as it eliminates more headlight glare at night. Nice looking in the rear view mirror during a sunny day and having zero glare in your mirror too.

Oh yeah, spend the money on a good metalized tint. Better heat rejection and lifetime warranty. The cheaper dyed films are the ones that turn purple and bubble. They don't block the heat as much either. They usually come with a 5 year warranty.

Don't use windex or anything with amonia in them to clean them. Just use vinegar and water. The tint guy will probably have some recommendation for cleaning them.

My $.02, For starters if you want the back window in one piece, some places will charge you extra. 2nd of all In Michigan the law also is 35% on your side windows, if you are not too worried about getting pulled over then I would go darker. I made the mistake of tinting them too light, and wishing they where darker. Then again I tint my own windows so I wasn't out that much money.

Here is my old 93 Z28 with 5% tint on sides and back. I loved being able to drive by someone, and have them stare trying to see who is in the car.

Heres mine... I have 5% on the back and 20% on the sides. I think I paid $150
