Unhappy Seatbelt buckles don't match?

I tried searching this topic but didn't have any luck. I recently bought an '01 SS and noticed the other day that the seatbelt buckles don't match. I looked at a few other cars online and found that I wasn't alone. Why did GM put 2 different buckle styles in these cars? Here is a pic of what I am talking about. Is everyone else's cars the same?

I have heard of this but can't remember why they did it.

I bought my Camaro used and the driver's seat buckle was broken. So I got a set of replacement belts from a wrecked Firebird on eBay. I changed just the broken buckle and then noticed it didn't fit into the receiver, so I had to change the receiver as well. Now the driver's side didn't match the passenger side belt so I changed the passenger side to match and also did the rear belts while I was at.

Now they all match but I thought it was because I went from Chevy belts to Pontiac belts. But my Camaro belts all matched before I changed them. So is it from Chevy to Pontiac... from LT1 to LS1... or what? I'm curious now.

I've done some searching on eBay at other "original" Camaro SS cars and I am NOT alone. I found one car that had 4000 miles in perfect original condition for $30,000 that was this way. Surely, GM engineers didn't do this on purpose!!....

In fact, the car I just bought was the same way. It only had 11k miles on it and I spoke with the original owner of the car and he said that it HAD to have came from the factory that way because he NEVER had an issue with the belts.

Okay... I'm blown AWAY!

I just checked our 35th LE SS and the buckles ARE different. The passenger side has the squared off version, and the driver side has the same buckle as all of buckles in our '95 Z28 (as far as I know--I can't check it right now). We've owned the SS since new, and got the '95 in '96 as it was the dealer's demo car for the dealership owner's wife.

I've never noticed that. How weird!
