Questions about 5-point harnesses on stock seats
Questions about 5-point harnesses on stock seats
Not sure if this is the right forum, but I hope so!
I am getting ready to order 2 5-point harnesses for my 95 Camaro. It has the stock seats, so unlike the TA seats, I don't have a headrest to utilize the individual shoulder harness.
Would a y-type fit better for the stock Camaro seat? This will be attatching to a roll bar, and the cross bar has a loop for the strap(s). Wolfe recommends the individual shoulder straps, but I can't see how they would lay correctly on the stock Camaro seat. Wouldn't the y-type be better?
I have about decided on Stroud. Anyone have any recommendations or experience w/ Stroud?
Also, can the side straps be bolted in where the stock belts are? Also, is the Stroud DOT approved? Can I remove my existing seat belts and not have any problems w/ the law, etc.?
Anyone that has a 5 point harness on their stock 93-97 Camaro seats, let me know how you feel!!
Thanks!

Re: Questions about 5-point harnesses on stock seats
You need to review the NHRA or IHRA rules if that's what you are planning to run in.... might want to check the 2006 NHRA Rule Book. I think they may have eliminated use of the "Y" type harness. The alternative would be a "V" style.
The lap belts can attach to the stock mounting hardware. The shoulder on the stock lap belt bolts is a shade too big for some of the belt hardware, at least on my Simpson harnesses. I had to grind the shoulder of the stock bolt down slightly so the 5-point lap belt clip would slide freely on it.
Buddy of mine put a 5-point harness in his 30th SS and had an upholstery shop cut holes in the seat back for the shoulders straps, binding the edges with matching white leather. Could not tell it from stock, and the holes in the seatback held the shoulder straps where they belong. Other than that, it would seem like the shoulder straps are going to be sort of off to the sides and not support you properly. In that case, you might want to consider a sternum strap.
I know the Simpson harnesses are not DOT legal, and can not (technically) be used on place of the stock belts on the street. Maybe check with Stroud about the DOT rating.

I just talked to Dan at Wolfe Racing, and he said they will be outlawing the Y and V types, and Stroud will eventually stop making them, and that the individual type are the only kind they sell. I went ahead and bought 2 Kam lock styles.
As far as support, they should be alright. They will be wrapped to my rear cross bar. But I do see your point, and that is why I asked. I just called Stroud and they said their belts were not DOT approved. I think that is crazy, but, rules are rules I guess. I can't see why they wouldn't be though...
Thanks for the info.
Anyone have pics of a 5 point harness on stock Camaro seats?
