Question about painting hood

Well I recently got a "big block" hood for my z28 and I am in the process of finding someone to do a nice paint job on it. I have been to many diferent places and a few of them have told me it would be exspensive because my cars paint has metalic flake in it. My question is are they just trying to yank more money out of my pocket or is paint with metalic flake in it harder to get to look right? Other places have given me a price with-out ever mentioning my cars flake in the paint. Thanks for any help.

He was probably trying to screw with you. I haven't seen many paint jobs with out metal flakes.

Metallic paint is definately harder to spray, expecially when not doing the whole car at once. With the flakes, there are a lot of things that could make them show up different, like the air pressure of the gun, and probably even the gun itself.

I would expect it to cost a little more for sure. Another thing is that with metallics, you can't just spray back and forth on all the coats. On the least one or two you have to lay the paint a certain way, otherwise you would basically be able to see the pattern of how it was sprayed.

So, it's going to maybe me more for those reasons, and the fact that metallic paint is typically more expensive that the same quality of a non-metallic color like black or white. What I mean is that Chevy metallic paint colors wouldn't necessarily be less than a Lamborghini non-metallic color, you know what I mean?

For just a hood I would think maybe $50-100 or so more for a metallic job over a non-metallic job.

Good luck!
