Painting the roof, need some help.

A buddy of mine has a 2000 red v6 camaro and wants the red hardtop painted black, just like the z28. Is there anyone here that would know how to do it without taking it to a body shop?

I know it's hard to get a quality paintjob with a clearcoat using only simple materials, but what about the prep work? If it is possible to prep the car before it goes to a shop for paint, that would help.

If you have any ideas or experience with this, please let me know.

In a nutshell: I want the cheapest possible way to get a quality paintjob on the roof and the ribbon(?) between the roof and rear window. Every little bit helps.

Thanks everyone.

have you got any estimates on painting the roof? I'd say $200 at the most. But if you want to prep it yourself, If the paint on the roof is in good shape, no stone chips, or peeling, or anything. You can wet sand it with some 500grit sand paper. Make sure its for wet sanding and use lots of water. You may want to mask off the windows and anything else you dont want sanded to be safe. when you sand, all you need to do is take the shine off, your not trying to go to bare metal. Hope that helps

i hear the dupli-color works okay if you wanna do it yourself... someone on the board actually re-did a good part of their car and it looked damn good to say the least...
im gonna try to re-do my front fascia in a few days...

Re: Painting the roof, need some help.

I don't need any type of primer after I wet sand it? And yes, the roof is in good condition, no rock chips or anything. I'll see what the body shop quotes me to just spray and coat if I do all the prep work.

My friend is probably not going to be too keen on painting the roof himself, but I can probably persuade him to do the prep work.

Thanks everyone.

Anyone else want to add anything?

You shouldn't need any primer. They can paint right over the old paint.

I don't know about a shop letting you do the prep work yourself and then having them spray it. At least our shop policy isn't to let the customer do it. Once you wetsand it's pretty much downhill from there. Just tape and pre clean. I would say if you and your buddy are willing to do the prepwork(which obviously is the base of a good paint job) go ahead and spray it yourselves. You would be hard pressed to run it on top of the roof and if you do manage to run the sail panels you've already got experience with wet sanding.
