Painted LT1 alternator

Has anyone ever done this? I am interested in doing something bacause that thing is ugly. Might as well do it now while the car is torn apart.

Re: Painted LT1 alternator

Check my sig on the polishing guide Todd did. I've done my alternator, 58mm Throttle body, Acc Bracket, water pump, filler neck...

Honestly I think that polishing stuff turns out better. Dont know why. And believe it or not it's easier and cheaper then you'd think. I just spent $20 on wheels/rouge at Sears and another $15 in sandpaper and I'm good to go.

Also considering in order to paint it properly you should clean and sandblast it (or just sand) anyway to get a clean surface - might as well just polish it, IMHO. I have painted stuff before - but I'd rather polish for the look of it. Just beware - polishing is addictive.

Yeah I can do all that here at work. Is there a way to take the alternator apart so that I can just bring the housing and not the whole thing? Thanks!

Nice! Did you take it apart to do it? What kind of paints did you use? Thanks!

Re: Painted LT1 alternator

Actually all i did was put a strip of masking tape around the center section where it's black. Then just clean, prep, and paint it. I just used a regular aluminum paint. You could probably use hi temp but just regular old paint worked for me.

I've done it and taken the whole thing apart, it's not too hard and I would def. recomend it just a little tough getting the brushes to stay compressed while you slide it into the housing, I would reccomend it.
