How do you read treadwear?

I want to know how the numbers rate, for example what does 400 mean or 140 mean? I know hard and soft to some degree, is 140 soft or hard?

Thanks

The higher the number, the longer the tires will last. You will get more mileage out of a 400 treadwear tire than a 140 treadwear tire.

The lower the number the"softer" the rubber compound is.
Sticker is a relative term, but typically a lower number tire will have more traction than a higher number tire.

..what does the average drag tire rate at? the reason why I'm asking is because I want the best tire for my rear which is an 18", and I don't want to spend money on a 18" drag tire. I just want a nice sticky tire for everyday use...

Well, my Nitto DRs are rated at 100, my Nitto 555 extreme's (Fronts) are rated at 400. I've gotten about 8-10K outta the rears, and they do need replacing. The fronts are about 4K old and look brand new.
