decals and fading

I have just received the "manta" decal kit in black and am currently searching for a shop to put it on my car...my dad is concerned that the decal itself will fade over time and further says that should I choose to remove the decal the paint underneath will be messed up. Has anyone had problems w/ or seen a car who's decals have faded? Just trying to gauge the possibility of this before I go through w/ the install. Thanks in advance!

Alot of these vinyl decal kits say they last about 4-7 years. This all depends on weather conditions and how you care for it. I'm not familiar with your kit but if it has a lot of colors it may seem to fad faster that others due to the different shades in colors. If its only a solid color you may not notice right away. Try not to leave it in the direct sunlight so that the color and decal may last longer. If you can have it garage kept, great. If not , try to leave it the shade. The paint under the decal should be fine. Actually the decal protects the paint, but later on if you choose to remove it and its been through tough weather you will notice that paint where the decal was will be preserved and not faded or burnt like the rest of the car. Then again it depends on how u care for your car too. Maybe by that time you will want to repaint the whole car. Hope this helps.

any decal will fade over time. There maybe some discoloration where you remove the decal from before. Ofcourse, when the decals fade, you could always put the same back on

I've got a banner on mine aswell...well just a vinyl strip across my windshield. It's black but doesn't show any kind of fading.

Thanks guys...it is solid black...I'm going to go ahead and install it...problem is trying to find a place to do it that doesn't charge more than the damn decal itself was. I may try to do it myself..but that could be disasterous, lol.

with anything just takes patients and time. Just be sure to have a mixture of soap and water when you put the deal on so you can adjust it and do it out of the sun. Good luck

The Manta decal is a PITA to install so you might not want to try this one for your first time

Also, I suspect you got it from Jay at 3rd gen decals? If so, he uses nothing but top notch vinyl so you shouldn't worry about it fading. I had a red decal on my car in high quality vinyl for around 1.5 years in Florida and no fading. The problem is when people use cheap vinyl... cheap vinyl fades... the more expensive stuff will last years and still look as good as new. Also, I removed the decal after 1.5 years and the paint was still fine underneath.
