Question Clay mold to create curvy fiberglass shapes?

I'm interested in making a very small center console... something that will eliminate the center storage compartment and just create a clean look around the shifter. I may go to a fox body mustang e-brake handle to lower the e-brake as well... but that's another story.

Anyways the shape I'm looking to create would be almost impossible with traditional styrafoam. Has anyone ever used modeling clay to sculpt the original shape on which to lay the fiberglass?

Thanks

yea, that's how I've made body kits, ground effects, and other stuff before. But you basically build and sculpt what you want, then fiberglass a mold... then you fiberglass your part... so it's a multi-step process.

hey 97FormulaWS-6, what did you use to create the objects that you made molds of? I've been looking into making some simple parts for my car and I can't seem to find enough info on it....maybe I'm not looking hard enough. Any info will be appreciated.

Well, typically I either mold it out of clay (Typically don't do this, only for certian projects) or carve it out of the pink styrofoam insulation. Then I overlay that with Fiberglass and wood frame to create the mold. Then I typically just reverse the process and lay fiberglass for the part in the mold (Using mold release of course or you'd fiberglass the mold to the part). Let it cure, then remove it from the mold, and typically it's in good shape for cleanup and prep for either paint, or an overcoat of Carbon-Fiber Cloth/Resin.

What the hell is that stuff called......I use that spray stuff that foams up real quick and then shape it into what you want.

Wish I had a can but its insulating spray in-a-can, spray into any shape you want then carve it up!

nope, your best bet would be to go to your local crafts store...its ok to cover ur face in shame lol, get that green foam they stick fake flowers in...you can smush it with ur fingers, cut it, smooth it in anyyyyyyy shape u want...thats how i made the gap filler for the console, took way to long. ive been asked to make more but im not going to unless someone will mass produce them because it took forever to make an was costly with fiberglass and resin. ill take pics when my car gets back from the turbo project in san antonio
