98-02 Camaro Tail Light "Smoke" Tint
98-02 Camaro Tail Light "Smoke" Tint
Hey All,
Does anyone know if the Camaro tail light covers they used to make are legal to place over the stock taillights??
I know every state has different rules and laws but generally do those that have them get pulled over and tickets etc??
Also are they so blacked out that you would need to change the bulbs to make them brighter?? If so do you know where you can get these brighter rear bulbs and how much??
These covers seem to be a lot eaiser then having to buy another set of tail lights and doing it yourself, although that is what I am going to have to do I think.
Any help would be appreicated!
Here is a picture of what covers I am talking about....

The ones you posted look like they're actually tinted and not covers. If you wanna do it yourself, it's not that difficult. Just gotta get some VHT nightshade and paint it on. You can get them to your preferred level of darkness that way too. The taillight COVERS are something different. They just snap on top of the taillights. I have a set, and even with them on, the bulbs are easily visible in daylight. I ditched them when I got my LT1 tails though. I have a pic of what they look like with the light on, just gotta find it.
As for being legal, technically anything that cuts light output and reflectiveness is illegal, but as far as I know the cops in NY are pretty lenient. I never got crap for them even when I got stopped for no front plate.

Only thing to watch out for with the covers is heat. The ebay link you had up mentioned "dimples" in the lens, and thats what happens to some people who use the covers. The heat gets trapped inside and starts to melt the plastic housing and it makes a dimple right in front of the bulb. It never happened to me, so I cant say for sure if it'll happen or not, but its something to keep in mind. Also heres pix of the lights on with the covers:
Lights off:

On:

The red isnt the brakes btw, just the lights that come on with the headlights. Brakes are about the same brightness as the turn signals.

The ones I am getting are in GREAT shape. I have heard about them having some issues but I am not sure I will have them a lot. I am glad to see that the covers dont really kill the lighting. I cant wait to pick these up and install these and see how it looks.
BTW- check out my new thread in this section. lol

Re: 98-02 Camaro Tail Light "Smoke" Tint

If I do find a set of LT1's cheap I am just gonna get them and try this myself. I think it looks SWEET!
This guy with this blue Camaro did a great job!
Re: 98-02 Camaro Tail Light "Smoke" Tint
That guy has LS1 tails though. It looks way better with the LT1 lights since everything lines up nicely.
Personally, I only like this look on light colored cars like this one:

so I think it'll looks great on yours ^.
I considered doing mine like this too, but since my cars red, i left em red.

Re: 98-02 Camaro Tail Light "Smoke" Tint
Any cover that tints the lights will dim the lighting in some way or another. I had tail light covers for awhile on my other car- the only thing to watch for is it left scratches on the tail panel under the tail lights from putting the covers on and off.
I personally would recommend either getting them painted at your local shop or try some VHT. A shop can put some black in with clear- and make the finish nice and glossy. VHT takes some elbow grease to get a nice gloss on it...but not impossible.

hmm...anyone lucky enough to have a pic like that on a maroon camaro? i think it would either fit in nicely and be awesome, or look like complete crap and make me very very sad, lol. not much of a middle ground

Re: 98-02 Camaro Tail Light "Smoke" Tint
I've only used VHT once, and IMO it is junk, impossible to get even and the finish is dull, I guess you could mess with it to try to get it to look good but I would just get covers.
