with 20's what is widest back tire

with 20's what is widest for back tire
thinking about 18 on front 20 on back would it be possible to go 275 or will i need to get some work done inside the wheel well

If your backspacing is correct and you get the right tire you can go the same as a smaller wheel. When you get larger wheels you get lower profile tires to keep the same overall diameter. You can go with some 275 or 285/25's on a 9 or 9.5 inch wide wheel.

The widest 20 inch passenger car tire is a 285.30.20
These fit nice on a 10 inch wheel with 7" or 7.5 inch backspace.

Hey Mr. StreamlineZ28, I have some 275-30-20's on a 1995 Camaro. They fit just fine on my rims which have a *40 mm Offset. I used 9.5 inch wheels and the tires (Nittos) fit just fine using that offset and don't rub even with a passenger in the rear. I haven't lowered the car yet but i easily could lower it the standard 1.5 inches and it would still fit just fine. I have the lowering springs but around my part of Texas it just might PAY for me to leave the car as is, but if you choose to lower after you get your wheels then it should be just fine.
Although many of the many of the supposedly "OPEN-MINDED" posters/members on this board have openly and rudely disagreed with my choice of parts and how I decided to modify *THIS Camaro ( I own four at the present time a '95, '69-Pro-Street, '88 & a 8-sec '67), I would encourage you to take a look at what I have to see what a 275/30/20 would fit like with 40 mm offset. The **285/30/20 would easily fit, but you may want to go more offset than what I went with to avoid any rubbing problems when carrying passengers/or installing extra stereo equip. in the rear along with lowering the car.

i was thinking about geiiting these in a 18 on the front and a 20 on the back but i have to find out if i can get them in a 9.5 not just 8.5

to no what size tires u can fit i need to no how wide of a rim ur getting if its a 9 u can fit up to a 325 at the most . . on a 10 probly 355.

Just remember... a tire like a 285/30-18 will be more than one full inch larger diameter than stock... so you raise the back end of the car 1/2" or more, and you will lose "effective" rear axle ratio... 3.42's will seem like "3.28's". Your speedo will need correction. And, moving the center of mass ourwards requires additional energy to bring the mass up to speed, so your rwHP drops......

Check Tire Rack for specs on these tires.. they will show you the outside diameter, and the range of wheel widths that the manufacturer recommends.... in the 285/30-18 for example, some manufacturers recommend a width of at least 10".... others will accept 9" or 9.5".

Something to think about.

TIRE RACK

A 285/30/18 does not have a larger diameter. A 285/35 is a hair smaller and a 295/35 is a hair larger. With 295/35's on my 18x10.5 Z06's my speedometer is off by 1mph, and it is now more accurate than with the factory 16's.


Also do not put anything larger than 285's on a 9 inch wheel. It is not safe to run anything wider, and the tires will get some weird wearing patterns.

you can't put a 325 on a 9 inch rim or a 355 on a 10 inch at least not at that profile
with an AVS sport from yokohama on a 315/35/17 they approve a 10.5-12.5 inch rim that is a huge difference than a 9 inch on a 325 and those aren't even that low profile

Do your tires rub at all when going over bumps or when turning? Do the back tires rub on the inner wheel well or the outer lip of the quarter panel? What offset would you recommend?

The tires don't rub at all. Not when going over bumps OR when turning. they don't rub the inner wheel well by any means and they fall inside the outer lip far enough so that even when turning HARD with a rear passenger nothing rubs. I went with 255-20's on the front and 275/30/20's on the rear and a wheel with 40 mm Offset on both the front and rear. Remember, I didn't lower the car, but from what I see of the car I easily could. I would say that if you go 20's then you MUST have aero-kit on the car, even if lowered (my Opinion).
I honestly don't recommend 20's on a F-body if you put lots and lots of miles on it every year, but I have several and the driving is split between vehicles so it works for ME. The RIDE stiffened up SOMEWHAT, but the Braking is what suffered the most (20's would increase the rotating mass and cause decreased braking if no other changes are made). Brake upgrades are in my plan. If quickness is of primary importance to you (it wasn't for me with *this one) then you'd better go with a 20 that is very close to the same overall diameter of your original tires to keep from changing your final gear ratio.
To answer your main question though, with 40mm offset and the size tires that I went with I have no probs at all. NONE.

p.s. - with the 20's increased contact patch on the road, this car will take a corner hard enough to loosen the fillings in your buddy's teeth.

Thanks Tscandal, that helps me out a lot! I'm planning on gettings some 20's next year and I've never seen a straight answer on any of the posts about 20's. Your car looks real sharp too.
