According to my research, the pace cars were 1996s that were decked out in 30th Anniversary colors.

Correct - per the White Book:
Three 1996 Z28 coupes in 1997 trim paced the 1996 Indy Brickyard 400. Festival 1997 replicas (white with Hugger Orange stripes and white houndstooth cloth seats) were sold as used cars by Chevy dealers. All were built within the first one-hundred 1997 VINs.

The three '96 Brickyard Camaro pace cars were actually 1996 model Camaros.

These three cars are particularly difficult to research and figure out how to talk about them correctly. I have pictures of one of them with WHITE Z28 emblems front and back for example, and have no idea if the car retained those. One or maybe all 3 of them have the Berger panel and underside of the spoiler painted gloss black. As far as I know, all three cars have the '93-'96 interior in them, just with white leather. They are real '96 cars.

Confusing stuff most magazines, books, and websites completely screw up because they don't strive for accuracy.

Shame that they don't since they are/will be the resources people use to restore these cars decades from now.

It's a shame when the same mistake repeats over and over too. You read that Jon Moss's 572 ZL-1 car is referred to as a '94 and sometimes even a '99. It's a '93... but it's almost always referred to as a '94. It did undergo the major body panel swaps around '99, but that doesn't make it a '99.

This car is a fake, pure and simple.

(I was asked to comment...)

First -- the car is an Export Camaro (look at mirrors, side lights, rear driving lights...) We would not have ordered any car in European trim to ship to a race in the United States.

Second - the Camaros we used were white --

Someone has put graphics on the car -- and if they are trying to sell it as a pace car, then they are mis-representing it.

(......would not be the first time that's happened!)

(oh......and yes, I'm getting older and forgetful - so I double checked with experts Mike Rhudy, Jim Hairston, and Howard Kirchenbauer........they got quite a chuckle out of it.....)

Why doesn't it have the Export Tail Lights?? Or did those just go to Japan?

Those were for '93-'96 Camaros only. I don't know if Camaros were exported in '93 at the moment, so it might just be '94-'96. I don't have time to check.

I think we can 100% decree this a fake pace/festival/support car.
The car also has Firebird/Trans Am seats in it. This make me even further think that the car is fake. I would think someone with a car this rare wouldn't change out the seats.

Neat. If that's true, I didn't know that.
