At what point do 4 bolt mains become necessary?

How is a Splayed cap put in? Is it a Straight Bolt or is it on a angle like the LS1? Just curious I dont think I have ever seen one.

Splayed = outer bolts at an angle.

I have never heard of someone that i know or read on cz28 that they have broken a main cap or pulled the caps off the block or any kind of main cap failure. But remeber this, it does not matter if you have 10 bolt mains you still can spin main bearings and that is what i hear are the most problems with LT1/4's are spun bearings. But the added strength of 4 bolt main caps caint hurt. If your are running a big shot or high boost i would not think twice because of the added cylider pressure against the piston, rods and crank. Just for an N/A motor stay with the 2 bolt mains. Just my .02 cents

That isn't what happens. The main caps can distort under pressure and this is one of the cuases of bearing failure.

What precautions can you take to keep from bearing faliure? 4 bolt caps or 6 bolt caps, proper oiling system? I know other failures can cause bearing failure but just the wear and tear on bearings, a splayed cap dont prevent main bearing failure. I see bearing failures all the time with any main cap set ups 4 or 6. I think there is alot of people think if they have splayed caps the bottom end is bullit proof and they are not, but thet do help for distortion and distortion is only 1 cause of bearing failure.

And i agree with you that caps can distort under pressure and can cause bearing failure.

Just FYI.

There are guys in my town running 2 bolt mains on 600hp iron block mills with no problems. The emphasis is usually on stronger 4340 steel cranks.

They don't recommend 4 bolt splayed mains unless you're using juice or forced induction.

Personally I would do 4 bolt mains on anything over 500hp as stated above.
