sumped fuel tank?
sumped fuel tank?
Guys, I'm pulling out my gas tank and fuel lines to install a cage, while it's out I would like to sump the stock tank. Who has done this? What needs to be done to prep the tank for welding and cutting. Any help would be great!

Frankly, the tank is hard to weld. It's thin sheet metal. That's a job I'd have someone else do who is an expert welder. Then it's their problem getting every trace of gas outa the tank! Some people fill the tank with water, others flood it with inert gas prior to welding. This can be dangerous if not done properly.

If you like, I can check with my friend Buddy (who does this kind of thing and will be doing mine in a couple of weeks). But as I said, the two methods I know about are filling the tank with argon or water before welding. Of course, thoroughly clean it out first!

My welder has the customer wash out the fuel tank prior to bringing it in. He then washes it out again upon arival making sure no vapor is left in the tank. Then welds it up with the tig and no problems.
