Very interesting. Good find! I need to read more now. I take it this head has a low deck height. This seems to have some good points. I wonder what trade-off they make. Hmmm, very good find!!

I think Unstable Bob posted a few times on these, and actually went to visit
Coates. Pretty sure that was at least 5 years ago, so its not likely you would even find the old thread. I work about 5 miles from the address shown on their website.... maybe next time I'm in the area I'll see if they are still in business.

Yeah, welcome to 2001.

I contacted Coates when I was building my engine and was told $15,000 deposit and no guarantee of delivery time. You can bet I signed up in a hurry.

Most of the hype has faded and the heads seem to be vaporware, outside of the prototypes. I've never yet heard of anyone actually running them, and none of the industry magazines have done reviews on them that I've seen over the last several years.

Yeah this info's kinda old. I actually did a project on this when I was taking automotive classes back in the day. Interesting read!

Re: Spherical Rotary Valve Cylinderhead...Wow!

There is ONE example of this I have seen work or attempt to

Husaberg-Roton. It's a 450cc SuperMoto engine.

For the displacement of the motor in comparison to some KTM's of the same size it's not making the power to switch to this design.

If you want to look at this further go to www.roton-engines.com

It's and IDEA, but there is so much farther that it has to be developed to be competitve it's not really worth it in my book.

They have been around for at least 10 years. Car Craft or Hot Rod did an article on them, but it was mainly a FYI type of thing, no data really.

As I said in another post about these today, Good idea, poor execution.
