Sb2

Ok, its time for me to start making plans for my next motor. I've decided I want to use SB2/2.2 top end and have a few questions. For the machine work to convert this heads to a LT1 reverse cooling/oil drain back who and how much should I plan on spending. If the cost is extreme I'll probably grab a gen1 350/400 block and use that instead. I did a search and found one or two other LT1 with this setup. I know the parts are $$$ but right now I'm trying to make a choice be LT1 block and gen1 block. I read somewhere that the SB2/2.2 heads have something similar to the LT1 steam pipe but in the front instead and the main problem was the oil drain backs.

Jason,

Your main problem is getting something that works well with the small bore of the LT motor. Any Sb2 head you see on ebay is for a 4.125"+ bore, and only the plate heads (260cc) are going to be good to start from for "fixing" to get them up to snuff.

The coversion since they are GM castings is not a huge issue but the rest of the combination is. A aftermarket SBC block that can go with a larger bore is your best bet.

check out musclemotorsports.com. they have a ton of nascar sb2 nascar parts. they also have some nice info. it is a big undertaking that may not be what you are looking for. the cost to build a good sb2 equipped motor was very expensive and didn't give us much more than our old combo(twice the cost and alot more rpms)
