Rod and piston Help ?

I looking at using eagle SIR rods (bushed) with Mahle forged piston with negative 5cc (.03 over)and Clevite H series bearings, and a Melling stanard volume oil pump.
Does this look like a worth wild set up for the bottom end. Thanks

Re: Rod and piston Help ?

Yeah, that's what I would do but I probably recomended it!

If you are going NA or a small N2O shot for a 355 you are golden... I was just talking with OldSStroker about a Joe Sherman 347 Ford that was very similar... Really good pistons with some inexpensive forged I beam rods.

The bearings and Melling pump will work out awesome.

Re: Rod and piston Help ?

The stock ones I think are in the -6cc range. The Mahle's are -5cc, but you should also deck the block so that will help with the quench and compression ratio.

Yes it will be at zero deck and 5.7 rods.Stock crank.

What are the gains if I went with 6" rods over the 5.7 rods?

Re: Rod and piston Help ?

Lighter parts.... you will stress the crank less since the pistons will have less mass. It will also help if you have a head port that is too small for the application.

Exactly.
Don't worry about the .300 longer rod... the real advantage comes from a lighter piston. FWIW, the Manley I-beams (similar to SIR's) are about 20 grams lighter.

Re: Rod and piston Help ?

It just so happens that I have a Mahle powerpack set for sale, for 6" rods. Brand new, open box.

$500 and I pay the shipping.

Look it up on summit: SBC250040FT

Mindgame thanks for the info on the Manley I-beams I will look into them.
Thanks for the offer on the pistons but I would rather not use 6" rods.

Dam more than I'm looking to spend,I'm also looking at the scat I-beam rods the are close in price to the eagle's.I wounder which ones are better for mt set-up.(355/5.7rods/stock crank/zero deck/blanced/LE2/NA)

Re: Rod and piston Help ?

i got 5.7" SIR rods and i'm going with the le2 setup. If i go with srp pistons 138081 will that compression be too much. I think the le2 heads are 55cc so that might be around 11.5:1. Also i was looking at mahle pistons but i cant seem to find one that will have a similar compression ratio.

Re: Rod and piston Help ?

Get a set of 4 eyebrow flattops,"0" deck the block, open the combustion chambers to 56CC's,with the Fel Pro .039 gasket if ya are running stock stroke. According to your cam ya should be fine.If ya run a larger size cam ya may be able to skip the combustion chamber enlargment.
If ya are running a 383 stroker the 5CC dish is OK.Again that depends on the cam.
