Post Paging Mr. Horsepower...

I was searching through old posts trying to find some answers. And I came upon one where someone was talking about your setup. I'm looking to do a pretty similar thing. I am looking to do a first gen 427 or 434 cubic inch SBC using a Dart Iron Eagle block. Specifics are still being ironed out. But the question I had was about wiring. What type of system are you using to run the motor? DFI, FAST, ?? And is it spliced into the stock LT1 computer or is that completely eliminated. I'm still trying to figure out how to get around that and how to run gauges. Can you still use your stock gauges, or did you mount up a custom gauge panel? Also, who did the headers for you? Thanks for any help you can give me with this.

I too was thinking of doing a 434 in my car and was talking to Chuck (MrHorsepower) about his setup.

However, I dont think anyone has heard from Chuck in 4+ months...mabye longer. Dont know where he is. ???

stupid question, but standalone means that no part of the stock LT1 wiring harness is still in the car right? or is the gauges run by the stock lt1 computer and everything else is controlled by the standalone system?

The gauges are not an issue. Oil pressure, voltage, fuel level and water temp gauges are NOT interfaced to the PCM in an LT1. They are all driven directly by connections to the engine/sensors. The tach should respond to virtually any signal. That is driven directly from the LT1 PCM. Only the speedo is an issue. That is driven directly from the LT1 PCM. But I believe Dakota Digital could solve that one. I run the stock PCM only for IAC (the MoTeC I have will not drive a stepper type IAC, only a PWM) and the speedo. The MoTeC drives everything else.

I guess the question would be, if you are going for a Gen 1 smallblock, why would you want any part of the LT1 PCM. Its entire operation is keyed to existance of the high and low res pulse from the OptiSpark, and that isn't possible with the Gen 1 setup.

Maybe I don't understand the specific engine/chassis combo you are planning.

i was only asking about the LT1 computer because i thought all the gauges were driven off a signal given by it. meaning all those sensors went to the computer which then went to the gauges. so if that computer was not there, none of the gauges worked. sorry for the miswording of my intentions. i understand about te tach, i was just worried about the others. but if those gauges can be run by a system such as FAST, then i have no worries. now i just need to know who did his headers

You still don't seem to understand. The gauges don't need any computer at all. They wire to sensors on the engine. Not the computer. All you need to worry about is the speedometer.

Hooker lists a SBC header application for these year cars and an LT1 header. I'm assuming then that the LT1 exhaust port is not located as the old style SBC. Hey, anyone have a detailed list of requirements to chuck the ECM and install a good old fashioned carburated ground pounding SBC? Gauges was a concern. Any other stumbling blocks?

HAHA, yeah, that's what I get for reading too fast. I missed the word "directly" in your response. My dyslexia is kicking in. I understand much better after rereading your post.
